I have always had the feeling that a large part of the literature on leadership has become an obstacle \u2013 much more than an aid \u2013 when it comes to promoting a true culture of leadership in organizations. The reason is simple: many of the ideas that have served as a guide for our professionals are based on the vision of the leader as someone charismatic who is at the top of the hierarchy and is able to know everything<\/strong>, and have answers for everything. The reality is far from being like that. For this reason, I have found Seth Godin’s<\/a> new book: “Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us”<\/strong> refreshing, ideal for the summer. In it he tells us about the possibilities that Web 2.0 offers us today to collaborate, to create and to lead our own “tribe”; that is, to lead a community of like-minded people made up of people who may be geographically dispersed, but who are connected. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In his book, Godin proposes a people-centered vision of leadership. Within that vision, innovation and leadership are no longer a matter of a “chosen one”, but a work shared by all. It is about turning our organizations into authentic nurseries of leaders at each and every level: from the receptionist to the CEO. In our conversation today we will look at some of the lessons we can take from “Lead Your Tribe”, Seth Godin’s proposal for the Age of Collaboration. His vision contains real key points that will help us advance in our exploration of the leadership of the future.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Organizations or Tribes?<\/h3>\n

On the social level, Web 2.0 is today a gigantic platform for collaboration that allows citizens to organize in networks, share their concerns and create interest groups that try to influence the decisions of politicians and public authorities. The Internet allows us to participate, create and learn collaboratively within global “tribes” that are based on trust. In the words of Seth Godin: <\/p>\n

“A tribe is a group of people connected to each other. This group is connected to a leader and an idea that manages to inspire passion in all its members.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a>In this context, leadership is not about “commanding” over others. Nothing like that. It is simply about finding our like-minded groups, and creating them if they do not exist. Because today, thanks to the collaborative platform, the old dream has come true: each individual can do his or her bit to change the world effectively. Therefore, a group only needs two things to be a tribe: a common interest and a way of communicating. It is not about persuading people to like something they don’t yet have. The Beatles did not invent young people. They just decided to lead them. Think of Obama<\/a>, who with his extraordinary work of persuasion got an army of volunteers throughout the country. He was able to detect their mood, formulated the issues that really concerned society, and thus connected with that formidable tribe capable of changing the previously written script. That tribe managed to raise more than $400 million, and was able to defeat the Democratic “machine” first, and the Republican roller later. The origin of tribes dates back 50,000 years. It is, therefore, a simple and powerful concept. It consists of leading, connecting people and connecting ideas<\/strong>. And that is something that people have always wanted. Human beings feel the need to belong, to be part of a tribe, to be able to contribute to (and from) a group of like-minded people. <\/p>\n

Millions of people looking for leaders<\/h3>\n

It is clear that, in one form or another, this need has reached the present day. Many people are used to belonging to spiritual or religious tribes, working tribes, community tribes, etc. The difference is that now, thanks in large part to the development of open and global communication platforms such as the Internet, tribes are emerging strongly across physical boundaries and distances. We can say that tribes are today all over the world and everywhere. Thanks to the Web, the barriers to leadership are much lower today. Right now, millions of people are looking for their leader, someone with ideas and vision that can inspire passion and energy. All of these people are trying to connect with like-minded people to make a real difference in society. And it’s very important to understand that they don’t want to lock themselves into one group or one idea. On the contrary, they yearn to belong to more than one tribe. Unlike just a few years ago, the tools to do so are now available. As Godin explains: <\/p>\n

“There are literally thousands of ways to coordinate and connect groups of people that didn’t exist a generation ago.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You don’t need permission to lead<\/h3>\n

As we have seen, Godin’s proposal for the Age of Collaboration is that now everyone can find a tribe, and even create one if the one they are looking for does not exist. The tools to meet, to talk, to share and collaborate, are there: they are social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or Tuenti. As Godin explains, you no longer need to ask for permission or authorization from anyone to lead: <\/p>\n

“All that’s missing is for you to step up, to let yourself be carried away by your passion and dare to make your vision a reality.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This means that you are the only obstacle, as you are the only person capable of putting the brakes on. In other words, it is in your hands to do something that will make a difference for others. You just need the vision, passion, and decision to see it through. <\/p>\n

Dare, make your idea come true<\/h3>\n

In theory, we have all the tools we need. But we resist taking the final step. Many people with great ideas don’t dare to lead because they’re afraid of standing out, of becoming someone different from the rest. They’re afraid to make themselves known for fear of criticism. It’s not surprising, since in our schools we were never rewarded for going to the blackboard to explain what we know. Quite the opposite. If we did it right, we became “balls”, and if we did it wrong, the teacher punished us. Above these educational deficiencies, we must understand that without criticism nothing great can be done or built<\/strong>. If we are not willing to make mistakes, we will hardly dare to lead. If, on the other hand, you are willing and daring to take the step, you will be able to shape a new vision that many people share. You will be able to make your idea a reality<\/a>. As we said, the tools to achieve this are there. The channel is open. None of us have an excuse not to be a leader. Only the fear of failure, or the fear of being wrong, can dissuade you from leading your own tribe. <\/p>\n

“If you’re not prepared to make mistakes, you’ll never come up with anything original.” Ken Robinson<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Seven basic ingredients<\/h3>\n

For Godin, these are the ingredients of the magic formula:\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

1. They question the status quo. <\/strong>Authentic leaders question the status quo, the current state of affairs.
\n2. They create their own culture. <\/strong>They are leaders who are able to create their own culture around their goal, and they also get other people to participate freely and actively in that culture.
\n 3. Curiosity. <\/span>
\n<\/strong> These leaders stand out because they harbor an extraordinary amount of curiosity about the world they are trying to change.<\/p>\n

4. Leadership and then charisma.<\/strong> They are people who use charisma in many different ways to attract and motivate their followers, but who don’t really need that charisma to be leaders. It’s the other way around: being a leader is what gives you charisma. 5. Communication. <\/strong> Authentic leaders 2.0<\/a> are able to communicate their vision of the future. <\/p>\n

6. Commitment. <\/strong>They are committed to their vision, and they make all of their decisions based on that commitment.
\n7. They facilitate connections between followers.<\/strong> Leaders do not seek to become the sole repositories of information. On the contrary, they help their followers to be able to connect with each other. <\/p>\n

“If you look at the leaders in your organization or in your community, you’ll see that each of them uses a combination of these seven elements. You don’t need to hold office, be powerful, or be influential to lead. You just have to be connected and engaged. \u201c<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What we should NOT do<\/h3>\n

– Being unable to learn from mistakes – Forgetting that a tribe has a life of its own, and is not a mere extension of the leader. – Thinking that we are the beginning and end of all decisions. That is, never delegating. – Making decisions based on the personal agenda rather than on the tribe’s agenda – Assuming that we cannot learn from others and, even worse, thinking that we know everything – Falling into “passion killers”, those monotonous and inefficient routines (paperwork, bureaucracy, useless meetings…) that are capable of destroying the passion and enthusiasm of the most creative of our followers. – Stifling our creativity -Letting the previous legacy kill our dream<\/p>\n

By way of summary<\/h3>\n

Millions of people are waiting for you. You don’t need permission to lead. You just need a dream. Shape your vision, create a movement, something that is really worthwhile. Dare and launch it. Get going. Do it, because hope and optimism are contagious. Think that the rest of us need it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
