ECONOMICS OF INTELLIGENCE \u00b7 FUTURE OF WORK<\/p>\n

AI is changing much more than the way we work.
\n It forces us to reconsider what makes us valuable and opens up new

For centuries we have lived with a certainty that we hardly needed to question: intelligence was a uniquely human capacity. Machines could multiply our strength and automate tasks, but thinking, reasoning, learning, and solving complex problems remained our territory. <\/p>\n

That frontier is changing. For the first time, we have machines capable of performing many of the cognitive activities that until recently we considered reserved for people. They can write, program, analyze information, design solutions, and participate in increasingly complex decision-making processes. <\/p>\n

This does not mean that machines understand or experience the world as we do, nor that they can
\nreplace all our capacities. Work has never been just work<\/h2>\n

When we talk about the impact of artificial intelligence, we almost always start with the same questions: What jobs will disappear? What new professions will emerge? What skills will we have to learn? These are important questions, but perhaps we are leaving out something fundamental. <\/p>\n

Work has never been just a way to make a living. It has also been a way to build our lives. <\/strong> It provides us with income, but also identity, recognition, learning, relationships and a sense of contribution. It even organizes our time and establishes a good part of our daily routines. <\/p>\n

Consider a professional who has been building his or her expertise and recognition around his or her ability to analyze complex problems for twenty years. Suddenly, an AI tool can perform much of that analysis in seconds. He may keep his job and increase his productivity, but what about his sense of competence and what made him feel especially valuable? <\/p>\n

Or let’s think of a young person starting their professional career. Until now, learning meant facing problems, making mistakes, developing criteria and gaining autonomy through experience. What happens if intelligent tools start to solve precisely the tasks that allowed them to develop those skills? <\/p>\n

These examples show us that AI doesn’t need to eliminate a job to profoundly transform our relationship with work. It can increase our productivity while also changing the sources of identity, learning, and recognition that we found in it. <\/p>\n

It is not enough to ask ourselves which jobs will survive. Being needed is not the same as being valuable<\/h2>\n

For much of our history, we have associated contribution with need. We did something because someone needed it. Our ability produced a result, that result brought utility, and that usefulness provided us with income, recognition and a sense of belonging. <\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence is beginning to question this equivalence. If a machine can perform certain tasks better, does it mean that those activities have lost their value to us? Or that we have ceased to be valuable because we are no longer essential to perform them? <\/p>\n

Think about chess. Machines have been playing better than humans for decades, and yet we continue to play, learn, and enjoy a game. The same goes for music: just because an AI can compose a piece doesn’t take away from the value of learning to play an instrument or sharing a musical experience with other people. <\/p>\n

The reason is simple: the value of an activity lies not exclusively in the result it produces, but also in the experience of performing it, in what we learn and in the relationships we build.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Philosopher Nick Bostrom has explored this question in Deep Utopia<\/em>, asking what would give meaning to our lives in a world where technologies could meet virtually all of our needs. We don’t need to reach that extreme scenario to recognize the depth of his question: what activities would we still want to do even if a machine could do them better than we could? <\/p>\n

Here comes a fundamental distinction between utility and meaning. Some activities have primarily instrumental value: we perform them to achieve a result. Others also have intrinsic value: they are worthwhile for the experience, learning, or relationships they contain. For a long time, work has combined the two dimensions, but AI may begin to separate them. <\/p>\n

The New Freedom Needs Conditions<\/h2>\n

Artificial intelligence isn’t just transforming what machines can do. It’s also dramatically expanding what we can do with them. Activities that previously required specialized knowledge, large teams, or considerable resources are becoming available to many more people. <\/p>\n

This expansion of capabilities opens up possibilities for learning, creating, undertaking, researching, or contributing in ways that were previously difficult to imagine. But it also introduces a question that I consider essential: how do we transform these new possibilities into greater freedom to decide what we want to do with our lives?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The answer is not as simple as having more powerful tools or more free time. A person may have access to extraordinary intelligence and yet lack the economic security, autonomy, or opportunities to take advantage of it. <\/p>\n

That’s why the first condition is material security<\/strong>. We can’t seriously talk about personal freedom if people don’t have enough income to live in dignity. If AI generates large productivity gains, we’ll need to find ways to turn some of those benefits into real opportunities, protection during job transitions, and shared well-being. <\/p>\n

The second condition is to expand our identity beyond the profession<\/strong>. For too long, the question “what do you do?” has served almost as an equivalent of “who are you?” Our profession may still be important, but we are also defined by the people we care for, the relationships we cultivate, what we learn, and the projects we choose to commit to. <\/p>\n

The third condition is to preserve our bonds and our ability to contribute<\/strong>. If some of the social functions of work lose centrality, we will need to strengthen other spaces of belonging, learning, and participation. Communities, shared projects, and intergenerational relationships can help us find new ways to add value and build meaning. <\/p>\n

And there is a fourth condition that seems especially important to me: learning to use artificial intelligence without giving up the development of our own capabilities<\/strong>. Just because a machine can solve a problem does not mean that we should always delegate its solution to it. Learning, striving, making mistakes and overcoming difficulties are part of our human experience and our ability to think with criteria and act autonomously. <\/p>\n

The freedom that AI can offer us is not, therefore, only about doing more things with less effort. If necessary to choose how to contribute<\/h2>\n

For generations we have organized much of our lives around what we needed to do to make a living. Our contribution was conditioned by the capabilities we possessed, the resources available, and the opportunities we found. <\/p>\n

The Intelligence Economy can begin to modify that relationship. AI expands the set of possibilities available to us, but that abundance alone does not determine which ones are worthwhile. The more alternatives we can explore, the more important our ability to choose with judgment, purpose, and responsibility becomes. <\/p>\n

The great human challenge of the Intelligence Economy will not only be to adapt to a world where machines can do more and more things for us, but to learn to choose, among the new possibilities that open up before us, those that really deserve our time, our talent and our commitment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This change does not mean that we will no longer need to work, nor that everyone can freely choose how they want to contribute. The future of employment will continue to be conditioned by economic and social realities, and the freedom we imagine will only be possible if we manage to create the necessary conditions to exercise it. <\/p>\n

But we can begin to change the way we understand progress. Perhaps it is not just about expanding what machines can do, but about increasing our ability to decide, with greater freedom and purpose, what is worth doing with the possibilities available to us. <\/p>\n

Because a society will not necessarily be better because it needs less human work or produces more results.
