“Questions are the engine of curiosity and the fuel of innovation.” Jeff Bezos, CEO Amazon.

In our previous post we addressed the importance of adopting a curious and open attitude towards uncertainty and learning to value ignorance as a means to drive growth and be open to new ideas and perspectives. Today, we’ll explore how leaders can transform that uncertainty into an opportunity by using powerful questions to foster a culture of learning and develop creative confidence and critical thinking in their team.

Uncertainty can present itself as a challenge in the business world, but over the years I have learned that asking questions is a valuable resource for successfully addressing it. Well-formulated questions allow us to discover new solutions and perspectives, gain valuable insights to make informed decisions, and foster a culture of continuous learning in our team. In this way, we can turn uncertainty into opportunities to innovate, grow and improve.

Questions invite participation and collaboration, and can lead to innovative and creative solutions. Instead of following a predictable and narrow path, the questions shine a light into a future full of possibilities. This recognizes the uncertainty inherent in all that is to come and allows for greater flexibility and adaptability in the face of change.

Imagine you’re running a company that’s facing a significant change in the market. Instead of following a rigid plan, if you decide to ask your team and clients questions, you can gain a deeper understanding of the situation and take advantage of opportunities that arise. Some questions you can ask include: “How do changes in the market affect our customers and how can we improve our products and services to meet their needs?” or “What emerging unmet needs do our customers have that could lead to a new business?”

By asking these questions, you’re encouraging collaboration and creativity from your team. In addition, you allow both your team and your customers to share their unique perspectives and solutions, which helps make the company more agile and better prepared to adapt to changes and seize new opportunities.

Leading from questions

In an uncertain and constantly changing world, it is evident that the leader no longer has all the answers, therefore, it is necessary to connect with collective intelligence and seek collaborative solutions. The role of the leader should not be to impose his individual vision, but to foster an approach based on asking courageous and deep questions, actively listening and developing individuals and the organization to work together and address the challenges and opportunities of the changing world.

Question-based leadership focuses on encouraging reflection and critical thinking rather than providing direct, definitive solutions. Today more than ever this is particularly important for the following reasons:

  1. Encourages creativity and innovation: By asking questions, leaders can help their followers think deeper and more critically about situations and challenges. This can lead to more creative solutions and a deeper understanding of problems.
  2. Encourages participation and commitment: Open-ended, dialogue-focused questions can help create an environment of collaboration and teamwork, rather than a culture of command and control.
  3. Encourages responsibility and decision-making: By allowing individuals to think for themselves and formulate their own solutions, they are given more responsibility and empowered to make informed decisions in an uncertain environment.
  4. Foster creative confidence and growth: By answering questions, followers can develop their own self-confidence and critical thinking skills, which helps them grow and develop.

Leading through a questioning approach rather than setting rigid goals can help a leader keep their eye on the future and explore new opportunities. By engaging others in finding solutions to relevant problems, perspectives and diversity of experiences can be leveraged to make informed decisions and move forward more quickly.

At the same time, allowing team members to take an active role in finding solutions fosters a more collaborative and participatory learning culture, which can increase motivation, innovation and productivity.

In daily practice, it is important that we learn to balance the focus on goals with the focus on questions. The combination of both approaches will not allow us to have a clear vision of where we want to go and at the same time maintain an open and flexible mindset to take advantage of the opportunities that arise along the way.

How to get started?

These are some of the questions we use in our Accelerate Programs and are effective in motivating people to step out of their comfort zone and explore new opportunities. By asking them open-ended and challenging questions, you can inspire your team to look for innovative and imaginative solutions.

  • What changes in our sector could have a significant impact on our business in the coming years?
  • What are the new technologies or trends that are emerging and how can they affect our business?
  • What is a revolutionary opportunity that could provide the foundation for an entirely new business?
  • What needs of our customers are not being met and how can we address them?
  • How can we reconcile short-term results with the exploration of new drivers of future growth?
  • What changes could we make to our business model to accelerate our growth?
  • What obstacles can we identify that are limiting our growth and how can we overcome them?
  • How can we explore new forms of collaboration and partnerships to better seize opportunities?
  • How can we incorporate continuous learning into our business strategy and culture?
  • What new capabilities do we need to develop to stay at the forefront of disruption and innovation?

I hope I’ve convinced you of the value of questions in leadership in uncertain times, it’s time to put it into practice. If you want to strengthen your leadership skills and transform uncertainty into opportunities, I encourage you to start asking open-ended, action-oriented questions in your daily work. Invite your team to participate and show genuine interest in their answers, you will be surprised by the results.
