“There are professional experiences that end when you leave the company. Others continue to live inside you for a lifetime.”

José Cabrera

After many years thinking about that stage, I wanted to tell it. The company that saw the future reflects my years at Sun Microsystems and a business and human adventure that began in a small office on Paseo de la Habana and ended up leading me to take on responsibilities in Europe.

I wrote this book to better understand what we experienced at Sun, preserve those memories before they fade, and share with new generations a story that can still teach us a lot about leadership, culture, innovation, adaptation, and the future.

A STORY TOLD FROM THE INSIDE

The company that saw the future is an invitation to travel through the history of Sun Microsystems from a little-known perspective: that of those of us who had to make a vision born in Silicon Valley a reality, from Spain and Europe.

If you worked at Sun, you’ll probably recognize people, places, and experiences. If you weren’t there, you’ll find out why that company left such a deep impression on those of us who are part of it.

The journey begins in a small office on Paseo de la Habana and goes through some of the most exciting moments of technological transformation: the expansion of the Internet, open systems, Java, the growth of Sun Ibérica and my subsequent responsibility in EMEA.

Sun saw much of the future. But anticipating it wasn’t always enough. The book also traces the decisions, tensions, and contradictions of a company that knew how to anticipate some of the most profound changes in the technology industry, but that didn’t always manage to capture the value it had helped create.

01 · INTERNET

The Network Is The Computer

Sun understood early on that the future of computing would not lie in isolated machines, but in the connection between them. That vision anticipated the networked world that we take for granted today.

02 · OPENING

Open Systems and Java

The commitment to open standards and Java expressed a powerful idea: to reduce the barriers between platforms and make the technology grow beyond traditional limits.

03 · THE PARADOX

Anticipating is not enough

Sun helped build much of the digital future, but his own story shows that an organization can be the first to see what’s coming and still struggle to evolve with what it’s created.

MEMORY · PEOPLE · LEGACY

Organizations also fade into memory if no one preserves their stories

This book was also born from that need: to preserve the memory of a shared adventure and recognize the people who made it possible. Because behind the technologies, the products, the strategies and the results there were always people capable of turning a vision into reality.

Over the years I have understood that the most valuable thing about that stage was not only the professional achievements, but the relationships, the learnings and a way of understanding organizations that still remains in many of us who were fortunate enough to be part of Sun.
