MY YEARS AT SUN

The company that saw the future

My years at Sun Microsystems Ibérica

José Cabrera · Foreword by Albert Triola

An invitation to explore the history of Sun from the perspective of those of us who had to make a vision born in Silicon Valley a reality, from Spain and Europe.

Portada de La empresa que vio el futuro, de José Cabrera

I wrote this book to better understand what we experienced at Sun, preserve those memories before they fade, and share with new generations a story that can still teach us a lot about leadership, culture, innovation, adaptation, and the future.

FROM SILICON VALLEY TO SPAIN

A story that continues to speak of the present

The journey begins in a small office on Paseo de la Habana and goes through some of the most exciting moments of technological transformation: the expansion of the Internet, open systems, the growth of Sun Ibérica and my subsequent responsibility in EMEA.

It’s not a story written from nostalgia or a complacent celebration of the past. It also addresses the decisions, contradictions, and difficulties of a company that anticipated much of the future, but didn’t always manage to capture the value it had helped create.

If you worked at Sun, you’ll probably recognize people, places, and experiences. If you weren’t there, you’ll find out why that company left such a deep impression on those of us who are part of it.

BEYOND SUN

The questions that accompany us

TALENT

How to lead talent
without suffocating it?

TRUST

How to combine freedom
and responsibility?

EVOLUTION

When does a fortress
become an obstacle?

THE FOOTPRINT OF PEOPLE

Preserving a shared history

Organizations, like people, end up fading into memory if no one preserves their stories. This book is also born from that need: to preserve the memory of a shared adventure and recognize the people who made it possible.

Because some professional experiences end when you leave the company. Others continue to live inside you for a lifetime.
