In this new interview, we’ll dive into the intriguing concept of antifragility and explore its practical application in our lives and organizations. We will have the privilege, with the help of ChatGPT, to delve into the brilliant mind of one of the foremost thinkers in this field, Nassim Taleb, who will give us a unique perspective on how to face and overcome the challenges of uncertainty. Taleb invites us to consider antifragility as a true art, a skill that allows us not only to survive, but to thrive and grow in an uncertain and changing world. During our conversation, we will explore the key ideas behind this notion, as well as the strategies and mindsets needed to embrace and capitalize on uncertainty in our personal and professional lives. In this chaotic world, antifragility becomes our guide to navigating turbulence and forging a successful future. Let us accept the challenge and emerge stronger. It’s time to embrace antifragility and thrive amid chaos.

Start!

Embracing uncertainty

JC: In your approach to antifragility, you stress the importance of ’embracing uncertainty’ rather than avoiding it. This concept challenges the conventional notion of seeking safety and predictability in our lives. Could you elaborate on what exactly it means to ’embrace uncertainty’ and how we can apply it in our everyday lives?

NT: Embracing uncertainty involves humbly acknowledging the limitation of our ability to predict and control all the events of our lives. Instead of resisting and fearing the unknown, it involves adopting an attitude of openness and curiosity towards the challenges and unexpected changes that arise. In the end, it’s about recognizing that uncertainty is not something to avoid, but fertile ground for creativity, innovation, and discovery. By embracing it, we allow ourselves to live a fuller and more enriching life, where we are willing to face challenges with courage and seize opportunities along the way.

JC: Do you think there are individual differences in the way people face and experience uncertainty?

NT: Absolutely. Some people possess a greater ability to cope with uncertainty and handle ambiguous situations without feeling overwhelmed or anxious. There are individuals who are more likely to take risks and approach uncertainty with an opportunity-seeking mindset, while others tend to avoid risk and prefer to stay in safe and predictable situations. Tolerance for ambiguity, attitude toward risk, and past experiences are some of the factors that can influence how a person relates to uncertainty. Recognizing these differences helps us better understand people and develop effective strategies to manage uncertainty constructively.

Antifragility: from surviving to thriving

JC: After “black swan”, in your new book he has coined a new term, “antifragility”. I would like to know what motivated you to write this new book. What was the personal impulse behind your exploration of this topic?

NT: My exploration of the concept of antifragility was driven by my interest in understanding how people and organizations can thrive in an uncertain and volatile world. After publishing my book “The Black Swan”, which focused on highly improbable events and their consequences, I felt the need to go beyond mere resistance or adaptation to external shocks. I realized there was underutilized potential in the way we deal with uncertainty. Instead of just trying to be resilient or bounce back from the blows, I began to explore the idea of how we might benefit from them. I wanted to find a way to embrace volatility and turn it into a source of growth and improvement.

Antifragility became the result of this search. I realized that there are systems and people that not only recover from external shocks, but actually strengthen themselves through them. This notion challenges the conventional way of thinking and offers a radically different perspective on how to deal with challenges and uncertainty. JC: How would you explain to a child the concept of antifragility? NT: I could explain it this way: Imagine that you are like a small plant in a garden. Some plants are very delicate, they break easily when the wind blows hard or when someone touches them sharply. These plants are fragile. Other plants are robust, no matter how much you touch them or how much wind blows, they stay the same. But there is a special type of plant that is even more incredible: antifragile plants.

Antifragile plants are those that, when the wind blows or someone touches them, instead of breaking, they become stronger. Every time they face a challenge, they grow larger and become more resilient. They’re like plant superheroes. They can adapt to different conditions and always find a way to thrive.

In our lives, we can also be antifragile. When we face problems or challenges, instead of getting scared or giving up, we can learn from them and become stronger. Every time we overcome an obstacle, we become better able to face new challenges in the future. Being antifragile means using hardship as opportunities to grow and improve, and never letting them defeat us.

So, just like these special plants, you too can be antifragile. Remember that the challenges you face are opportunities to become an even stronger and braver version of yourself. Don’t be afraid of challenges, embrace them and discover your power to be antifragile!”

JC: The metaphor you used reminded me of the popular saying “what does not kill, heals”, could there be some connection between both ideas? NT: Antifragility is more than just curing or surviving. It’s about harnessing adversity as a driving force for growth and improvement, enabling people, organizations, and systems to become stronger and thrive in a volatile and ever-changing environment. JC: How do you tie this powerful way of approaching challenges from a growth perspective with your concepts of black swans? NT: A black swan refers to a highly unlikely but shocking event that has significant consequences. It can be both positive and negative and often challenges our pre-existing expectations and mental models. The connection between antifragility and black swans lies in how we approach and respond to these unpredictable events. Instead of trying to predict or avoid black swans altogether, antifragility proposes that we use those events as opportunities to grow and improve. Antifragility helps us embrace uncertainty and unpredictable events, such as black swans, and teaches us to find opportunities for growth and improvement in the midst of adversity. By building an anti-fragile mindset and approach, we can face black swans with greater confidence and leverage them as catalysts for our personal and professional development.

A new way of thinking and perceiving the world

JC: In your book, you highlight the importance of being open to the possibility that our mental models, developed in a context of a linear and predictable world, need to evolve to meet the challenges of an uncertain, complex and constantly changing environment. What mental models and approaches do you see as beneficial to adapt and thrive in an environment where disruption is the norm? uncertain and ever-changing?

NT: When it comes to preparing for an uncertain future, it’s critical to adopt certain mental models and perspectives that help us adapt and thrive in an ever-changing environment. One of the most important approaches is to cultivate an antifragility mindset. This involves recognizing that uncertainty is inevitable and that instead of fearing or avoiding it, we can use it as an opportunity to grow and strengthen ourselves. Another relevant mental model is exponential thinking. Instead of relying on linear, predictable assumptions, we should be open to the idea that the future can be highly nonlinear and that unexpected and disruptive events can occur. This requires mental flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to new circumstances.

In addition, it is important to develop a continuous learning mindset. The world is changing rapidly and we must be willing to acquire new knowledge and skills on a constant basis. This allows us to be prepared for future challenges and gives us the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

The practical application of anti-agility

JC: Based on your research and experiences: Do you think uncertainty can be beneficial for us as professionals? Do you think facing uncertain and challenging situations can lead to further growth, learning and development in our careers? NT: Definitely. Experience confirms me can be highly beneficial for us as professionals.

Facing uncertain and challenging situations gives us the opportunity to grow, learn and develop significantly in our careers.

Uncertainty pushes us out of our comfort zone and forces us to adapt and look for innovative solutions. It challenges us to think creatively, to be flexible in our approach to problems, and to find new perspectives. In addition, facing uncertainty allows us to develop resilience and agility skills, as we get used to dealing with unforeseen changes and finding opportunities in the midst of uncertainty. JC: In your work you highlight the importance of the ‘negative pathway’ as a strategy to strengthen antifragility. Could you explain how to apply this approach in our personal and professional lives? NT: The practice of the “negative way” in relation to antifragility refers to an approach based on eliminating those things that weaken or make us fragile, rather than constantly looking for new strategies or solutions.

It means identifying and avoiding actions, situations or systems that may cause harm or vulnerability, thus allowing us to strengthen ourselves and be more resilient in the face of challenges. It is an approach of simplification and protection that seeks to reduce exposure to unnecessary risks and eliminate weaknesses that could affect us. JC: Many of the things you propose to do require great personal and creative trust. Do you see personal and creative confidence as key pillars of professional antifragility? NT: Yes, trust plays a crucial role in promoting antifragility on both a personal and business level.

By trusting our adaptive skills and abilities, we feel more confident to take risks, learn from failures, and explore new opportunities. In addition, trust in our colleagues and work teams fosters collaboration, exchange of ideas and decentralized decision-making, essential elements in building an antifragile organization. Likewise, confidence in our own creativity drives us to embrace challenges and uncertainty with courage and optimism, seeking innovative solutions and taking advantage of every adverse situation as an opportunity for learning and growth.

JC: Could you share with us some practical tips or steps we could take to improve our antifragility on a professional and individual level? What aspects do you consider most relevant and how could we begin to implement them in our daily lives? NT: Improving our antifragility involves adopting a mindset of continuous learning, facing uncertainty with courage, developing a healthy risk tolerance, and cultivating collaborative relationships. Here are some practical tips you can follow to achieve this:

  1. Face uncertainty boldly: Accept that uncertainty is inevitable and don’t try to avoid it at all costs. Instead of fearing it, embrace it as an opportunity to develop and strengthen yourself. Step out of your comfort zone, tackle new challenges, and learn to manage stress and anxiety that may arise in uncertain situations.
  2. Develop a healthy risk tolerance: Assess risks appropriately and balance potential rewards with potential risks. Don’t be afraid to make risky decisions when necessary, but be aware of limits and potential negative impacts. Learn to manage risks prudently and look for opportunities where the benefits outweigh the perceived risks.
  3. Cultivate collaborative relationships: Makes meaningful connections with other professionals and seeks opportunities to collaborate and learn from them. Builds relationships based on mutual trust, support and exchange of ideas. Take advantage of the skills and knowledge of others to strengthen your own antifragility and participate in communities or projects that encourage teamwork and synergy.
  4. Cultivate a continuous learning mindset: Always keep your thirst for knowledge and look for opportunities to learn and grow in all areas relevant to your professional and personal life. Read books, attend conferences, participate in courses, and keep an open attitude toward new experiences and perspectives.

JC: Could you offer our readers some thought-provoking questions to assess their level of development in relation to these capabilities? NT: Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone and take calculated risks in pursuit of personal growth? How do you react to changes and disruptive situations?, Do you feel overwhelmed and fearful, try to avoid them or do you see them as opportunities to learn and grow?, How do you relate to failure and mistakes?, Do you see them as opportunities to learn and improve, or do you avoid and demotivate yourself before them?, Are you open to continuous learning and seek to acquire new skills and knowledge constantly?, Do you build and maintain strong relationships based on trust and collaboration? Do you rely on others and share knowledge to grow together? By reflecting on these questions, we can assess our level of development and identify areas we can focus on to improve our antifragility and better adapt to an ever-changing environment.

Educating for antifragility

JC: To conclude, I would like to address our role as parents and how we can raise our children with the antifragility approach in mind. Your ideas suggest that our children’s education should focus on developing their adaptability, resilience and growth in an unpredictable and challenging world. Is that so?” NT: Definitely. In an increasingly uncertain and challenging world, it is critical that parents adopt the anti-fragility approach in parenting. Often, as parents, we tend to overprotect our children and take too much responsibility for their experiences and successes or failures.

To foster antifragility in our children, it is important to find a balance between the necessary protection and the opportunity to face challenges. We must offer them a safe and supportive environment, but also allow them to experience risk, failure, and problem-solving for themselves. This involves enabling them to make decisions, learn from mistakes and develop their autonomy. By being constantly protected and rescued from challenges and adversities, our children can develop emotional dependence and difficulties facing problems on their own. This overprotection increases their fragility and can limit their ability to learn from failures and develop coping skills.

On the other hand, there are parents who take overprotection even further by fighting their children’s battles instead of allowing them to face them and learn from them. This attitude prevents our children from developing problem-solving, decision-making, and adaptability skills. Not having the opportunity to face challenges and overcome obstacles, they are deprived of the necessary experiences to develop their antifragility. In both cases, the impact on our children’s antifragility is negative. We must offer them a safe and supportive environment, but also allow them to experience risk, failure, and problem-solving for themselves. The goal as parents should not be to build a perfect and safe world, but to become antifragile by better preparing them to face the challenges and seize the opportunities that arise in an ever-changing environment.

JC: On behalf of all readers, we want to express our deep gratitude to Nassim Taleb for sharing his valuable knowledge and perspectives on antifragility. His challenging vision and innovative approach have provided us with a new way to understand and embrace the uncertainty in our lives. As we have learned from Taleb, antifragility is not just an abstract theory, but a path that requires daily discipline and an open mind to change. It’s time to take up the challenge and put these principles into practice in our lives and careers. The time has come to take action and become antifragile professionals, willing to learn from crises, experiment, innovate and embrace change as a constant.

Are you willing to accept the challenge?
