Sun Microsystems was one of the companies that best anticipated the digital world that was to come. In this book, I share my experience from within that adventure: its ideas, its culture, its people, and the lessons of leadership, innovation, and transformation that are still fully valid today.

Long before the Internet transformed our lives, Sun Microsystems had already understood that the future would be connected. The network as a computer, open systems, Java and a deeply non-conformist culture anticipated much of the technological world that we take for granted today. This book traces that story from the inside, through my years at Sun Microsystems Ibérica and the people, decisions and learnings that made that company an extraordinary place.

01 · THE NETWORK
When computing continued to revolve around isolated machines, Sun understood that the real value would be in the connection between them. The network would eventually become the infrastructure of the digital world.
02 · JAVA
Java expressed another of Sun’s great bets: to free software from barriers between platforms. A simple and powerful idea that contributed decisively to accelerating the expansion of the Internet.
04 · LEGACY
When success is not enough: how a company that anticipated so much of the future faced the challenge of reinventing the model that had made it successful.
A STORY LIVED FROM THE INSIDE
I joined Sun Microsystems in 1989, when the company was beginning to build its presence in Spain. Three years later I took over the management of Sun Microsystems Ibérica and, over time, my journey also led me to European responsibilities in sales, services and operations.
During those years I experienced from the inside the growth of the Internet, the arrival of Java, the international expansion of Sun and also the profound changes that transformed the technology industry. But, above all, I had the opportunity to work with extraordinary people and to experience a business culture that is difficult to forget.
