Artificial intelligence (AI) is the subject of a global debate about its transformative potential and the risks involved. This emerging technology is transforming many aspects of life, including the way we work, communicate and consume information. So it is considered by many experts as the next black swan worldwide, referring to its potential to have a transformative and significant impact on society.

In recent months, several experts have warned about the speed with which tools based on generative artificial intelligence are being implemented that allow you to easily create texts, music, images, videos or code with a level of competence similar or even higher than that of humans. They have also expressed concern about the lack of control in the race of tech giants to develop increasingly powerful and complex digital minds. This week, Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in the field of AI and former vice president of engineering at Google, has resigned to have the freedom to warn about the dangers of this ever-evolving technology.

For years, I have closely followed debates about artificial intelligence and it is evident that there are still many myths and misunderstandings that need to be cleared up. The transformative potential of AI in our society is undoubted, but it is also important to consider the risks and challenges involved. Therefore, we must be prepared to address them effectively and maximize the benefits that AI can offer. In this post, we’ll explore how AI could be the next global “black swan” and the need for an open and honest debate about the benefits and risks of this emerging technology.

The need for greater understanding

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as reasoning, perception, learning, and decision-making. However, the lack of understanding about how AI works and its implications is presented as a major barrier to its ethical and responsible development. It is therefore critical that society has a better understanding of what AI is and how it can affect their lives.

The definition of AI has evolved over time and, depending on its scope and ability to perform specific or multiple tasks, two basic types are usually differentiated:

  • Specific AI, which refers to AI systems designed to perform specific, limited tasks, such as image classification, machine translation, or pattern identification in data. The most common examples are virtual assistants like Apple’s Siri, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, machine translators like Google Translate, and chatbots used by banks and businesses to answer their customers’ questions.

The difference between the various types of specific AI lies in the ultimate goal of each, whether it is data-driven decision-making (machine learning), understanding human language (natural language processing), interpreting images and videos (computer vision), creating systems capable of generating new data, such as text, images, and sounds, which appear to have been produced by humans. (generative artificial intelligence), or the creation of robots that can perform complex tasks (robotics).

  • General AI, which refers to AI systems capable of performing any intellectual task that a human being can perform. Currently, there are no artificial intelligence systems that meet all the criteria to be considered as general AI, that is, a machine that has a wide range of cognitive abilities that allow it to perform tasks and solve problems in various domains in a similar way as a human does. Therefore, Artificial General Intelligence (GAI) remains a long-term goal of AI research.

GAI (General Artificial Intelligence)differs from other exponential technologies such as robotics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and specific artificial intelligence (AI) in its ability to mimic human thought and cognition in a general, flexible, and creative way.

For example, GAI could be used to improve health care, reduce production costs in manufacturing, optimize logistics and transportation, and improve business decision-making and resource management. So, if used responsibly, advances in GAI could have a significant positive impact on the global economy and society as a whole.

These are times to question

In the current context of the development of Pervasive Artificial Intelligence (GAI), it is essential to critically reflect on its impact and the possible implications on our society and everyday life. such as privacy, security, responsibility and ethics. In particular, it is important to assess the potential impact of GAI on the economy and employment, as there is widespread concern among the population that its automation may trigger a significant decline in the number of available jobs.

1. What are the necessary measures to ensure the ethical and responsible development of artificial intelligence?

The way in which issues of ethics and values are addressed in the development of artificial intelligence is critical to ensuring that this technology is developed responsibly and ethically. A human-centred approach and a clear understanding of the ethical and societal implications of AI are needed. This implies that users and consumers must have access to clear and accurate information about the AI systems they use, including how decisions are made and how their personal data is protected. In addition, it is important for governments and institutions to foster education and digital inclusion to ensure that society is prepared for the future of AI.

How to ensure effective governance and international cooperation in the use and regulation of IAG?

Recently, the Future of Life Institute published a letter signed by leading figures in the tech world, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, urging a "public and verifiable" pause to reflect on the risks of AI and urging governments to regulate the technology. In my opinion, the proposal for a pause is not feasible because of the economic interests involved. However, I see it as a courageous initiative that highlights the need to move more cautiously on AI regulation and to implement robust regulations to ensure that personal data is treated fairly and transparently. Instead of a pause, a gradual transition that allows people, policymakers and institutions to better understand the effects of AI, personally experience its benefits and disadvantages, adapt our economy and establish appropriate regulations would be preferable.

How can we take full advantage of the benefits of artificial intelligence without sacrificing people's privacy and security?

It is critical to consider the privacy and human rights risks associated with the use of GAI, addressing issues such as algorithmic bias and discrimination in automated decision-making by identifying and mitigating biased training data. The current regulation establishes the need to collect and store only the data necessary for the specific purpose of the application of AI, ensuring that this data is properly protected and securely deleted when it is no longer needed. In addition, it is imperative to implement appropriate security measures, such as encryption and authentication, to protect personal data and ensure that it is only accessible by authorized persons. Education and digital literacy are other keys to ensuring transparency and accountability in the ethical and responsible use of AI.

How to prevent an increase in existing inequalities and discrimination in automated decision-making in the GAI?

We must be aware that the inappropriate use of GAI can increase inequality and social exclusion by automating certain jobs and tasks, leaving certain groups of people without jobs and opportunities. It is therefore crucial to identify biases and inequalities in tools such as ChapGPT to understand how decision-making algorithms are currently used and whether they are representative of the diversity of the people and communities to which the technology is applied. The input data used to train GAI models should be representative of the diversity of people and communities to which the technology is applied, in order to avoid biased outcomes and discrimination in automated decision-making. This can perpetuate and amplify existing discrimination and social exclusion, which is particularly dangerous in areas such as employee selection and financial decision-making.

How can a just and sustainable transition to an HAI-driven economy be ensured, taking into account the potential impact of automation on employment?

One of the most widespread concerns is the belief that AI will inevitably replace human workers, leading to massive job losses. While it is true that AI can automate certain jobs and tasks, it can also create new jobs and opportunities in AI-related areas. As automation through GAI transforms the labour market, it is crucial to ensure that workers have the skills and knowledge needed to adapt and take advantage of emerging opportunities. Education and training can help prepare workers for the future and ensure a just and sustainable transition to an automation-driven economy. In addition, it will be necessary to implement social redistribution policies that help workers who lose their jobs due to automation to find new employment opportunities and that the benefits of GAI are distributed equitably.

How are leading companies using artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and competitiveness?

The key to improving productivity with AI is to have a clear roadmap that prioritizes AI initiatives that are tied to business value across the organization, and an AI strategy that is aligned with broader corporate goals. In addition, it is imperative that senior management is committed and aligned with the organization's AI vision and strategy. Achieving this requires a credible leader who leads AI initiatives, is empowered to advance them collaboratively with peers across business units and functions, and systematically tracks a comprehensive set of well-defined KPIs to measure the incremental impact of AI initiatives. Finally, it is important to have a clear framework for AI governance that covers every step of the development process. It is crucial to have the technical ability to integrate data into AI models quickly and in real time, as well as integrate structured internal data, such as a data lake containing customer information from all business units, to automate most data-related processes, such as data tagging and quality control.

What new skills and competencies could we develop to adapt to the age of artificial intelligence?

Undoubtedly, the era of artificial intelligence demands the development of new skills and competencies to adapt to it, such as the ability to work with advanced technologies and knowledge in data analysis. However, I believe that soft skills such as critical thinking will be fundamental to evaluate the information generated by AI and make informed decisions accordingly. In addition, it will be important to develop collaboration and flexibility skills, as well as be open to continuous learning and constant adaptation to change in the new AI-driven work environment, since although AI is very effective in repetitive and predictable tasks, its practical application requires creativity and innovation to find new and innovative solutions and take advantage of emerging opportunities.

How can we foster an environment of continuous learning and development of skills in artificial intelligence in our team?

To accelerate the development of AI skills in our team, it is first necessary to create a learning ecosystem that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experiences among team members, through regular meetings, discussion groups and the creation of a culture of collaboration and feedback. Second, it's important to provide access to AI resources and tools, such as open source libraries, datasets, and machine learning platforms, and encourage experimentation and innovation on AI projects and challenges at work, allowing team members to put what they've learned into practice. Finally, it is critical to recognize and reward the effort and dedication of team members in their learning and development of AI skills, whether through promotions, bonuses or the assignment of challenging projects.

What are the most common applications of artificial intelligence today and how can this technology transform my business?

Incorporating AI into your business can transform it by improving efficiency, reducing costs, automating processes, improving customer service, personalizing marketing, and increasing security. Currently, AI is being widely used in various industries and in everyday life. The most common applications include natural language processing (NLP) to improve human-computer interaction, computer vision for object and people recognition in images and videos, business process automation through robotics and automation of manufacturing processes, fraud detection and cybersecurity in financial and government institutions, personalization of content and advertising on digital platforms, as well as medical diagnosis and treatment through analysis of medical images and patient data.

In what ways can we harness artificial intelligence to create a positive impact on people's quality of life and the world at large?

There is already much evidence showing that the use of artificial intelligence can improve the quality of life and the world through personalized health care, accessible education, environmental sustainability, security and the fight against poverty and social inequality. For example, AI can improve healthcare by enabling early identification of diseases and personalization of treatments. It can also reduce environmental impact by monitoring and preventing pollution and managing natural resources. In addition, it can increase security in areas such as transportation and surveillance, and automate repetitive tasks to free up time for more creative tasks.

It is critical not only to question, but to find answers to the complex questions posed by artificial intelligence. It is time to act collectively, an ignorant society is vulnerable and easily manipulated, so it is time to educate ourselves, learn and not fall into apocalyptic sensationalism. We must be masters of our destiny, regulate AI intelligently and stop the abusive practices and social damage caused by the companies behind the advances of artificial intelligence, because we are talking about science and technology, but also about rights, economy, democracy, equality, inclusion and peace.

Black swan positive or negative?

The term “black swan,” according to Nasim Taleb, refers to highly improbable and unpredictable events that have a major impact on our life or society at large. Consequently, a black swan can have both a positive and negative effect. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic is considered a black swan that has had a negative impact on public health and the global economy. On the other hand, the invention of the internet could also be considered a black swan with a positive impact on the way we communicate, work and relate.

As we have seen, GAI could have a very positive impact on society. It could help solve many of the world’s most serious problems, such as poverty, disease and climate change. It could also allow us to make important scientific discoveries that could lead to significant breakthroughs in many areas of life.

However, there are also concerns about the possible negative effects of GAI. For example, some fear that a very advanced IAG could spiral out of control and cause harm to society. It could also increase unemployment by automating jobs currently performed by humans.

I am personally convinced that AI as a positive black swan has the potential to give us all new and incredible capabilities; and that we can imagine a world in which we all have access to help with almost any cognitive task, providing a great multiplier force for human ingenuity and creativity.

While artificial intelligence offers numerous opportunities and benefits, we cannot ignore the risks and challenges involved in its development and use. So it is important to keep the debate open on how we address these issues to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly, and to ensure that the development of the technology benefits society as a whole and not just a few.
