“Garantizar una representación equitativa de las mujeres en la vanguardia de la IA es un imperativo estratégico que va más allá de la diversidad: mitiga prejuicios, promueve la innovación ética e inspira a futuras generaciones de líderes.”

Ana Paula Assis, Presidenta EMEA IBM

In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), female leadership faces a number of unique challenges that require immediate attention and action. A recent IBM study “Female Leadership in the Age of AI” has highlighted several critical challenges that women must overcome to take on leadership roles in this emerging field. As the study notes, ensuring equal representation of women at the forefront of the AI revolution goes far beyond achieving an organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. In fact, it is a strategic imperative that will help mitigate bias, promote ethical innovation, and ensure that its development and application are aligned with our human values.

In this post, we invite you to join us as we explore these challenges, from the trust gap to the need for support and skills development, and discuss potential solutions to foster greater inclusion and equity in AI leadership

Trust Gap

One of the most significant challenges is the trust gap. IBM’s study reveals that only 46% of women feel confident in their leadership capabilities in the age of AI, compared to 61% of men. This disparity in self-confidence must be urgently addressed to ensure that both women and men feel equally prepared to lead in the implementation of AI solutions.

The trust gap manifests itself in the lower self-perception of competence among women in leadership roles, especially in highly technical fields such as AI. This insecurity may be rooted in factors such as the lack of female representation in technology leadership positions and the persistence of gender stereotypes that question women’s ability to lead in technology-dominated areas. To close this gap, organizations must implement targeted mentoring and coaching programs that strengthen women’s confidence in their leadership skills and potential. In addition, it is crucial to promote success stories of women leaders in AI to inspire and motivate others.

Lack of Representation

Despite the fact that 73% of business leaders in EMEA consider it crucial to increase female leadership to mitigate gender bias in AI, only 33% of companies have a woman in charge of strategic decisions about AI. This low representation of women in decisive roles indicates an urgent need to improve the inclusion of women in these critical positions.

Not only does this underrepresentation limit the diversity of perspectives in decision-making, but it also perpetuates the trust gap by not offering enough role models for young women interested in tech careers. Companies should take proactive steps to identify and promote women eager to advance by collaborating with AI, establishing policies that favor gender diversity at executive levels, and fostering an inclusive environment that values and respects everyone’s contributions. This can include implementing gender quotas in hiring and promotion processes, as well as creating artificial intelligence and leadership development programs specifically for women.

Labor Vulnerability

Women also show greater concern than men about being replaced by AI, at 46% vs. 37%, respectively. This fear can limit women’s willingness to adopt and lead in AI technologies, underscoring the need for clear policies and organizational support to mitigate these fears.

In a previous reflection I have addressed the issue of labor vulnerability in the AI Age. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we are being honest with ourselves and others. The courage of vulnerability implies leaving behind the comfort and security that our comfort zone gives us, and venturing into a zone of growth and construction of new realities. Companies must transparently communicate the opportunities that AI can offer and how they can benefit women’s careers, showing how AI can act as a tool to empower and expand women’s professional capabilities. Beyond developing an in-depth knowledge of AI technologies relevant to our field of work, we must focus on honing those inherently human skills that distinguish us from machines. By working collaboratively with AI, women can develop as augmented professionals, able to leverage technological capabilities to innovate, lead complex projects, and make data-informed strategic decisions.

Skill Development

Both men and women leaders express the need for more support in developing skills and opportunities to experiment with AI. IBM’s study shows that 50% of leaders, regardless of gender, want more AI development and learning opportunities.

To lead in a world dominated by AI, it is crucial for women to develop a strong understanding of emerging technologies. This includes knowledge of how AI works, its applications, and its limitations. Leaders must be aware of the latest innovations and technological trends to make informed and strategic decisions. To close this gap, organizations must invest in continuous training programs and foster a culture of learning that allows all leaders to improve their AI competencies. Offering specialized AI workshops, seminars, and courses can equip women with the tools needed to feel more confident and competent in their roles. In addition, companies should provide environments where women can experiment with AI technologies and apply their learnings in real projects, thus strengthening their skills and confidence.

Equity and Inclusion

Finally, only 37% of companies in markets such as France and the UK consider advancing in female leadership roles a priority, compared to an average of 51% in the EMEA region. AndThis disparity shows that there is still a long way to go for organizations to truly prioritize the inclusion of women in AI leadership roles.

The lack of priority in these markets suggests an insufficient appreciation of gender diversity as a key factor for business success and innovation. It is essential that companies in these markets take a more equitable and proactive approach, setting clear and measurable targets to increase female representation at all levels of leadership. This includes not only hiring and promoting women, but also creating a work environment that values and respects diversity, recognizing the added value that women can bring in strategic decision-making and leading technology initiatives. Organizations must develop policies and practices that drive inclusion, such as leadership development programs, support networks, and the elimination of bias in selection and performance evaluation processes.

Strengths of Women’s Leadership

Despite the aforementioned challenges, it is important to highlight that female leadership has intrinsic strengths that exceed the capabilities of artificial intelligence. These qualities not only complement the use of AI but are also essential for its effective and ethical implementation.

  • Emotional intelligence: Emotional intelligence is a fundamental component of female leadership and transformational leadership. Through self-control, resilience, and empathy, leaders can effectively navigate interpersonal challenges and motivate their followers toward deep emotional engagement with the organization’s vision and goals. The ability to influence others and emotional connection are essential for success in leadership and personal life. AI, while efficient in data processing and analytics, lacks the ability to understand and manage human emotions with the same depth as a human leader. Empathy allows women leaders to connect with their teams, understand their needs and motivations, and foster a culture of support and collaboration.
  • Strategic and Innovative Thinking: Female leadership is often characterized by a strategic and innovative approach, capable of visualizing the big picture and developing creative solutions to complex problems. This kind of thinking is essential in the age of AI, where the ability to anticipate change and adapt quickly is critical. Women leaders bring a unique perspective that can drive innovation and progress within organizations. Strategic thinking involves the ability to visualize the future, anticipate trends, and plan for the long term. While AI is great at analyzing data and executing specific tasks based on existing patterns, it does not possess the intrinsic ability to foresee future scenarios holistically and adaptively.
  • Ethical Decision Making: Ethical decision-making is a key strength of female leadership in the face of AI, as it helps mitigate bias, promotes social responsibility, and ensures transparency. AI lacks the inherent ability to make ethical decisions based on human values, a fundamental ability that only humans possess. Women leaders tend to value social impact and human well-being, advocating for policies that benefit communities and respect human rights. Its ethical approach prevents the misuse of AI and establishes regulations to protect people from abuses such as mass surveillance or automated discrimination. In addition, they balance innovation with social and environmental responsibility, ensuring sustainable and fair development of technology. This combination of ethics and leadership is essential for an AI implementation that is equitable and beneficial to all of society.
  • Adaptive Capacity and Resilience: Women leaders have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for adaptation and resilience in the face of constant challenges and changes. These qualities are especially valuable in a dynamic environment like AI, where rapid technological evolution requires a flexible and resilient mindset. The ability to adapt and persevere in the face of adversity allows women leaders to guide their teams confidently and effectively, even in times of uncertainty. The ability to adapt and resilience is a key strength of female leadership in the face of AI, allowing a rapid response to technological changes and the effective management of uncertainty. Their resilience fosters innovation, allowing them to learn from failures and continuously improve strategies. This ensures that organizations not only survive, but thrive in the age of artificial intelligence.
