“Artificial intelligence and automation will change the world of work in ways we can’t yet imagine. But instead of fearing AI as a threat to our jobs, we should see it as a tool to improve and enrich our personal and work lives.” José Cabrera – CEO Cabrera MC
In the reflection above, we explored how artificial intelligence can improve our quality of life and transform the way we work, learn and relate to each other. However, it is also important to consider their worrying impacts on society, especially in terms of job vulnerability. Have you ever worried that your work could be replaced by a machine or software due to AI?
Artificial intelligence is just one catalyst for changes in the world of work, driving automation and process optimization in various industries. However, the underlying problem is not the AI itself, but the reality that many tasks and jobs have been replaceable for years, and automation has only accelerated this process.
In this post, I want to invite you to look at vulnerability in a different way. It is often associated with weakness and lack of control over our destiny, but it can also be seen as a strength. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we are being honest with ourselves and others. We recognize that we are not perfect and that we need help and support at certain times, which can make us more connected and empathetic to others. This skill can be a powerful tool in any area of life, including the workplace. Are you afraid of being vulnerable? If so, you’re not sol@.
The courage to be vulnerable
Vulnerability is a powerful tool for establishing trust and strengthening meaningful connections with others. True courage is not in hiding our vulnerability, but in embracing it and using it as a driving force to achieve our goals and dreams. Brené Brown
Getting in touch with our vulnerability requires courage. It is easier to deny or ignore our sensitivity, privileging the image of having a solid and strong appearance. However, by denying our vulnerability, we are also denying an important part of ourselves, which can lead to emotional disconnection and a lack of empathy towards others. By acknowledging our vulnerability, we allow ourselves to connect with our emotions and needs, which in turn allows us to connect more authentically and empathetically with others, by allowing us to be honest and authentic with ourselves.
Recognizing ourselves as vulnerable is not the same as feeling weak, and this confusion can lead us to not accept who we are and to want to hide our vulnerable condition. The weakness is associated rather with a fearful attitude, flight and not coping with the experience of a new professional reality. On the other hand, getting in touch with one’s own vulnerability requires courage, accepting that we are neither super women nor super men, but rather human beings, sensitive, complex and contradictory, and that deep down we long to feel safe and recognized.
Professionally, getting in touch with our vulnerability also allows us to connect with our visible reality. Seeing our anxieties, fears and shames, we also see that we share these feelings with all other people, and what I have learned over the years is that this vulnerability rather than separating us from others gives us a unique opportunity to connect on a deep level with others, asking for help and sharing our primary needs. Ultimately, vulnerability is an act of courage that allows us to live up to our most important values and goals.
The courage of vulnerability implies leaving behind the comfort and security that our comfort zone gives us, and venturing into a zone of growth and construction of new realities. In the professional field, the comfort zone usually refers to the position we have occupied for years in the company, where we feel comfortable and protected. However, to develop professionally and adapt to the constant changes in the world of work, we need to step out of our comfort zone and take the risk of the unknown. Sometimes, it can be riskier to stay in our comfort zone than to venture into new opportunities. Do you dare to explore a world full of possibilities and build a new reality for yourself?
Three steps to overcome vulnerability and create your desired future
As we have seen in previous reflections , these three simple steps have helped many vulnerable staff to change their status from “vulnerable victim” to “protagonist of their own future”.
You’re not alone
If you’re facing the job challenge of AI and feeling vulnerable, you’re not alone. Many other peers are going through the same thing and there are resources available to collectively address and develop new skills and competencies in the field of AI. There are resources and tools available to collectively address and develop new skills and competencies in the field of AI. These are some questions that we address in our Acelera programs and can help you identify, together with your team, the skills necessary to overcome the occupational vulnerability of AI:
- What technical skills are needed in our industry to work with AI?
- How can we improve our data analysis skills to adapt to the AI era?
- Do we as a team have the programming skills to work with software and applications that use AI?
- How can we learn more about cybersecurity and protect our systems from cyberattacks?
- How can I improve our ability to work in teams and collaborate with colleagues on AI projects?
- How do we need new problem-solving skills to address the challenges that arise when working with AI?
- How can we develop our leadership skills to lead and guide others in AI projects?
- How to consolidate a culture of innovation that allows us to anticipate changes, adapt and learn quickly as technologies and work processes change in our industry?
- Who are our reference rivals in terms of artificial intelligence and robotics?
This is a crucial time to build our future, using our collective experiences and learnings to increase our resilience to the new reality and design a desirable future. Although we cannot anticipate the uncertain future, we can devote all our energies to building it. If we are willing to adapt and learn, AI can be a powerful tool to boost our career and enrich our work lives.
