Motivation and superpower

JC: Simon, throughout your career you have been a source of inspiration to many people, including me, with your ideas and approaches to inspirational leadership. I would love to know what drives your dedication and what motivates you to continue sharing your knowledge and perspectives.

FF: What drives me to continue exploring and sharing my knowledge and ideas about leadership and innovation is a deep conviction that we all have the potential to make a positive impact on the world through inspirational leadership. My main goal is to help people discover their purpose and lead with an other-centered approach, which cares about people’s well-being and seeks long-term impact. I firmly believe that when leaders act with empathy, responsibility and a vision for the future, they have the power to transform their organizations and create an environment in which people can flourish and reach their full potential.

JC: Based on the results obtained, you seem to do exceptionally well. What do you consider to be your superpower?

FF: I humbly believe that my “superpower” lies in My ability to effectively communicate complex and profound ideas in a clear and accessible way. Through clear and compelling communication, I can convey powerful messages about leadership, purpose, and motivation, making a lasting impact on those who listen to my words. In addition, I often use stories and make emotional connections with my audience to make sure ideas live on in their minds and hearts.

For me, the books I have written and the talks I give are much more than just presentations of knowledge or ideas. They are invitations to a joint journey, a shared experience that we can all embark on together. Through my own experiences and learnings, I seek to inspire and motivate people to embark on their own journey of discovery and growth. I believe we all have something valuable to contribute to the world, and by sharing our stories and perspectives, we can learn from each other and grow together.

Finite and infinite games

JC: In your most recent book, “The Infinite Game,” you make the distinction between finite games and infinite games. Could you elaborate on the contrast between the two and share some of the learnings you have gained from it?

Finite play features well-known players who follow fixed rules and have an agreed goal. There is always a definite beginning, development and end. On the other hand, infinite play involves the participation of both known and unknown players, where the rules are modifiable, allowing you to play in various ways, and the goal is to perpetuate the game and stay in it for as long as possible.

In our lives, we are players immersed in infinite games on a daily basis. For example, there is no such thing as being the best parent or being number one in your marriage. Nor is there a race that can be won, nor is it about winning in learning. Someone is never declared the absolute winner in the business world.

What I’ve learned is that when we play an infinite game, like business, with a finite mindset thinking we can be number one, what ends up happening is that we damage trust, cooperation, and innovation. Leaders who play the infinite game focus on building strong, trusting relationships, and making a positive impact on both their industry and society at large.

A New Perspective on Leadership

JC: In your videos, you give us a new perspective on leadership, challenging established paradigms and offering a refreshing and enriching vision for those who want to lead more effectively and meaningfully. Could you share with us what your vision of leadership is and why you think it is so relevant in our times?

SS: For me, leadership is a game in the sense that it is a continuous process of learning, growing and overcoming. Instead of seeing it as a competition to win or lose, I see it as an opportunity to collaborate, inspire, and elevate others to their best. As in a game, there are rules and challenges, but there is also room for creativity, strategy and adaptability.

In this leadership game, it’s not just about achieving individual goals or seeking personal success. It’s about having a clear purpose and focusing on a goal bigger than yourself. It’s about cultivating an infinite mindset, where the focus is on making a long-term positive impact and building thriving organizations and communities.

Just like in a game, leadership involves working as a team and building relationships of trust and collaboration. It’s about creating an environment where all participants feel valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique strengths and abilities. In this game, there is no definitive end, it is a continuous journey of learning and growth.

From my perspective, the most meaningful thing is to understand that being a leader is not simply about having a title or a position of authority , but about taking responsibility for guiding, inspiring and making a positive impact on people and the world around us.

We live in a world in constant change and complexity, where we face increasing challenges and must deal with constant uncertainties. In this context, the infinite mindset presents itself as an invaluable approach, giving leaders the ability to adapt and grow in the midst of adversity.

Lead from a just cause

JC: Purpose has become a key issue in the realm of leadership and organizational management. More and more leaders and organizations recognize the importance of having a clear and authentic purpose that guides them in their actions and decisions. Could you share with us your perspective on how a just cause can impact the leadership and performance of the organization?

SS: Companies that lead with purpose can achieve greater loyalty, consistency, and relevance in their customer relationships, which in turn translates into strong, sustainable business results. The importance of purpose is reflected in business results. According to studies, the performance of companies that have a clear sense of purpose improves by ten times the average performance of the S&P 500. This shows that purpose is not just a philosophical or idealistic matter, but has a tangible impact on profitability and long-term success.

JC: In your first book “Start with the Why,” you already explored the impact of purpose on organizations. What do you think is the process leaders can follow to discover a purpose that inspires and motivates their team?

SS: Purpose is not something that is created artificially or decided arbitrarily. Instead, purpose is something that already exists within the organization, and the task of leaders is to discover it. The purpose of an organization lies in its DNA, in its raison d’être and in the unique contribution it can make to society. It is something rooted in its identity and what differentiates it from other organizations. Finding that purpose requires deep exploration, listening to the people who are part of the organization, understanding their motivations and values, and reflecting on how they can make a meaningful difference in the world.

Here are some questions that can help you discover your organization’s purpose with the help of your team: What impact do you think we can have as an organization on the world or on people’s lives? What is our unique contribution, what are the core values we share as a team/organization? What ethical and moral principles are fundamental to us, what makes us different from other organizations or teams? What are our unique strengths and capabilities, what is the legacy we would like to leave as an organization? What lasting and meaningful changes do we want to achieve?

JC: Considering the impact of artificial intelligence and technology on our lives, Do you think artificial intelligence can influence the way organizations discover and communicate their “Why”? And how do you think it can affect the way people relate to organizations and their purpose?

FF: While it’s true that AI can be a powerful tool, its impact depends on how it’s used and whether it stays aligned with an organization’s purpose and core values. AI can be a powerful tool for improving efficiency and productivity, but it should not replace authenticity and human connection.

Build Teams with Confidence

JC: Building trust and collaboration in work teams is essential to achieve success in any organization. However, it’s not always easy to create an environment where team members feel safe to express themselves and collaborate openly. Could you share with us some strategies or practical approaches that leaders can adopt to create an environment of trust and foster collaboration in their teams?

SS: The starting point, which we need to be aware of, is that when people feel safe in their work environment, it creates an environment conducive to creativity, open communication, and a willingness to collaborate. This security and trust are key to fostering growth, innovation and achieving extraordinary results.

Working in a trusted team is an experience we all recognize. It’s an environment where we feel safe to admit mistakes, request training, and ask for help, without fear of being humiliated or punished. In that kind of team, we have every confidence that our leaders and colleagues will support us immediately. However, when we do not have trusted teams, we find ourselves in a group of people who come to work every day lying, hiding and pretending. They hide mistakes, don’t admit they don’t know something, and never ask for help for fear of being singled out in future rounds of layoffs or being prevented from moving up the organization.

The problem with this dynamic is that if we hide mistakes and people pretend to know everything or do everything, those problems eventually compound and weaken the organization as a whole. To succeed in the infinite game of business, it’s critical to commit to building trustworthy teams, and strong leadership plays a crucial role in this.

In a safe work environment, employees should be able to express their ideas without fear of criticism or negative judgment. Trust allows them to take risks, learn from mistakes, and experiment with new solutions. In addition, open and honest communication facilitates effective collaboration among team members, driving synergy and efficiency at work.

JC: In situations where the circle of safety is broken and trust between team members is lost, What are the key actions a leader should take to address this situation and rebuild trust? Could you share some examples or effective strategies you’ve observed in your experience?

SS: In general, when the circle of security is threatened, the leader has a responsibility to take action to restore and strengthen it. This involves staying calm, actively listening, communicating clearly, encouraging learning, and taking corrective action to improve trust and confidence in the team. By doing so, the leader can meet the challenges and work toward building a safer and more productive work environment. Empathy and active listening are essential skills that allow leaders to understand the needs, perspectives and emotions of others, thus recovering collaboration, commitment and creativity in the team. Hence, the importance of valuing the diversity of opinions and seek to create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued.

Learn from reference rivals

JC: One of the innovative aspects you mention in your approach to leadership as an infinite game is the relevance of having a “worthy opponent” who challenges us and inspires us to improve. This idea transcends the traditional notion of competition and suggests a relationship in which both leaders and their rivals can learn and grow together. Could you delve into how leaders can take advantage of the presence of worthy rivals to enhance their learning, growth and overcoming limitations?

SS: A worthy opponent is one competitor whose strength highlights our weaknesses. There will always be other companies that are better at marketing, have superior products, stronger leadership, a stronger culture, or a clearer vision. Instead of feeling uncomfortable when their name comes up or trying to undermine them to stay ahead in the metrics, it’s better to harness all that competitive energy, examine ourselves closely, and determine where we have room for improvement.

It is essential to remember that the objective of the infinite game there is no clear winner and loser. The goal is not simply to beat the competition, but to learn from it and adapt. By facing worthy rivals, we can develop a learning mindset and an attitude of openness towards innovation. They challenge us to rethink our strategies, to be more creative, and to look for new ways to stand out.

Embrace existential flexibility

JC: I understand that business agility and existential flexibility in leadership as an infinite game are two different concepts that address different aspects in the field of leadership and business management. Could you explain the differences between these two concepts and how each contributes to the adaptability and success of organizations in an ever-changing business environment?

FF: While business agility relates to an organization’s ability to adapt to the external environment, existential flexibility refers to the individual’s ability to adapt and grow in response to life’s challenges and changes. Both concepts are important in the business context, but they focus on different aspects: business agility in the organization and existential flexibility in the individual.

Business agility refers to an organization’s ability to adapt quickly to changes in the environment, respond efficiently to market demands, and seize emerging opportunities. It involves being flexible, agile and responsive to change, and having the ability to quickly adjust strategies, processes and organizational structures.

On the other hand, existential flexibility focuses on an individual mindset and attitude. It’s about having the ability to adapt and be flexible on a personal level, to embrace change, learn from experiences and grow through them. Existential flexibility involves a willingness to question entrenched beliefs, to adapt and modify our perspectives and behaviors, and to be open to new ways of thinking and acting.

JC: Can you explain it in a simple way for a child to understand?

Imagine that you are playing with your friends in a park and they plan to play soccer. Everyone is excited and has a plan for how they’re going to play. But suddenly, it starts raining very hard and the football field fills with water. Now, they can’t play football as they had planned. This is where existential flexibility comes in.

Existential flexibility means we can adapt and change our plans when things don’t go as we expected. Instead of feeling frustrated and disappointed, we can look for new ways to have fun and take advantage of the situation.

Existential flexibility teaches us that we can’t always control what happens, but we can choose how to react to those changes and find creative solutions. It allows us to be happier and enjoy the different experiences that life presents us.

Have the courage to lead

JC: In our daily lives as leaders, we are constantly faced with external pressures that push us to play the finite game. These pressures instigate us to focus on short-term results and prioritize immediate interests. How can we cultivate and maintain the courage necessary to resist external pressures and lead with an infinite mindset?

FF: Courage is a fundamental attribute of ethical leadership. Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where we are pressured to take actions that go against our principles and values. In these moments, it is necessary to show courage and take a firm stand, not only for our own sense of integrity, but also for the well-being of others and the positive impact we seek to generate.

Courage to lead involves facing difficult situations and standing firm on our ethical principles, even when that means taking on powerful people or groups. It requires a willingness to face conflict and stand up for what is right, even if it is uncomfortable or risky.

JC: What tips or practical strategies can you share with us to stay true to our principles and have the courage to stand up to those who pressure us against our just cause?

SS: These are some inalienable behaviors that I have observed in courageous leaders: a courageous leader is willing to take calculated risks and face the consequences of his actions. This involves stepping out of your comfort zone and making tough decisions, even when there is uncertainty and challenges involved.

These leaders understand that growth and progress often require taking risks for the sake of a greater goal. They prioritize the long-term well-being of their team, organization, or community over short-term comfort.

Instead of avoiding challenging situations, courageous leaders face them with courage and determination, demonstrating their commitment to their cause and their ability to overcome obstacles on the path to success. In addition, a courageous leader is not afraid to make difficult and challenging decisions, even when facing uncertainty or resistance. They are willing to take calculated risks and face the consequences of their actions, prioritizing long-term well-being over short-term comfort.

In infinite leadership in practice

JC: ? Can you suggest based on your experience some questions that we can use to explore and put into practice infinite leadership with the help of your team?

SS: These are some questions that can guide you to start discussion and reflection in your team. As you move through the process, new questions and specific topics related to your organization and its unique circumstances may arise. The important thing is to foster an open and collaborative dialogue, and commit to the implementation of infinite leadership practices that promote sustainable growth and a positive impact on the organization:

What specific actions can we take to make quarterly results compatible with long-term growth, What are our organization’s core values and how can we ensure they guide our decisions and actions rather than short-term external pressures? What steps can we take to develop the infinite mindset in our team members and enable them to make autonomous decisions? What are some current challenges we face as an organization and how can we approach them from an infinite leadership perspective? What tough decisions might we need to make to make a long-term impact?

As we move forward on our path as leaders, it is essential to reflect on our leadership style, constantly look for opportunities for growth and learning, and adapt as circumstances evolve. In this sense, the interview with Sinek has given us a unique and valuable perspective on leadership as an infinite game. His insights invite us to reflect on the importance of having a clear purpose, building trust in our teams, facing challenges with courage, and adopting a long-term growth mindset. Without a doubt, Sinek has inspired us to become authentic leaders, committed and capable of generating a positive impact in our organizations and communities. Thank you Simon for your immense contribution to our understanding of leadership!
