Vision & Motivation

Dr. Lee, a good starting point for the conversation would be this: You mentioned that artificial intelligence should be conceived as a kind of invention that will mark an era, just as the steam engine and electricity did. What leads you to consider this scenario?

I think we’ve only experienced a very limited amount of truly innovative technologies that impact every aspect of our lives. Artificial intelligence is one such technology as it has the ability to learn and make accurate decisions, make predictions and classifications based solely on the analysis of a large amount of data. This capability will bring us amazing efficiency, increased profits, and cost savings. In addition, it will free people from routine jobs and have an impact on every profession imaginable. In many ways, artificial intelligence is as transformative as electricity, and could even be considered even more influential.

Until now, advances in AI have been limited to single-domain tasks. To this day, AI can more efficiently process massive amounts of information about something very specific, such as playing a game, medical diagnoses, or speech recognition. However, you can’t think laterally to apply what you’ve learned in a different domain. You can’t form an opinion about what you’re doing. And he definitely doesn’t have feelings about what he’s doing.

Our understanding of ourselves and our role in society is already being challenged, albeit gradually. If humans will no longer need to perform a variety of jobs and if what we have learned in school will soon no longer be applicable, how do we adjust our course and our expectations of our working lives? These questions should be on the minds of governments, their economic advisers, education ministers, school principals and deans, and business leaders, as well as parents everywhere.

Are we adequately prepared to face the challenges of artificial intelligence?

AI presents both opportunities and challenges, and we must be prepared to address them effectively. Preparation involves several aspects. In the field of education, we must ensure that future generations are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world. This includes fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, as well as providing an education that adapts to changing needs.

At the enterprise level, companies need to be willing to adopt AI technologies effectively and reimagine their business models. This can include reassigning employees to more strategic and creative roles as AI automates routine tasks.

Governments also play a crucial role in preparing for AI challenges. They must develop policies and regulations that encourage innovation while protecting citizens’ rights and privacy. In addition, it is critical that ethics and fairness issues related to AI are addressed.

As we move into this era of innovation, some confusion has arisen around what actually constitutes artificial intelligence and its limits. What does artificial intelligence mean to you? How would you define it?

To me, artificial intelligence is a technological revolution that has allowed machines to perform tasks that could previously only be performed by humans. It represents the ability of intelligent software and hardware to simulate and understand human learning processes, quantify human thinking, and explain human behavior. AI has evolved significantly in recent years and has become a leading technology around the world. This revolution is based on the proliferation of data, often called the “new oil,” that drives AI.

In my book “AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order,” I explored how the U.S. and China are leading the AI revolution in different ways, with the U.S. at the forefront of research and China leveraging big data for specific applications. AI has changed the way various industries and sectors work, from big data-driven decision-making to the proliferation of robots and autonomous vehicles. While it presents significant opportunities, it also poses challenges related to job losses and other issues.

In my most recent book “AI 2041”, published in 2021, in collaboration with Chen Qiufan, we explore how AI could shape the world in 2041. I am committed to telling the story of AI in a balanced and constructive way, highlighting its potential and the challenges it poses, and seeking to inspire hope in the future of AI and its impact on society.

The stories in his book “AI 2041” offer a portrait of our world in 2041, based on technologies with a greater than 80 percent probability of happening in that time period. I may overestimate or underestimate some, but I think this book represents a set of responsible and likely scenarios. How can you be so confident?

My confidence comes from a long history of experience in the technology and artificial intelligence industry. Over the past forty years, I’ve been involved in AI product research and development at companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Google. In addition, I have invested more than $3 billion in related technologies. This experience has given me a working understanding of the timelines and processes required to take a technology from its academic phase to its widespread application. I have also had the opportunity to advise governments on AI strategies, allowing me to make predictions based on my understanding of policy and regulatory frameworks, as well as the reasoning behind them.

It is important to note that I avoid making speculative predictions about fundamental technological advances and instead rely heavily on the application and extrapolation of existing technologies. Since AI has yet to penetrate more than 10 percent of our industries, I see many opportunities to reimagine our future by integrating AI into these fields. I firmly believe that even without significant advancements, AI has the potential to have a profound impact on our society. This book represents my testimony of that belief. In the midst of what appears to be a feedback loop of negative stories about AI, I think it’s essential to tell these other stories as well and address the crucial question of “What happens next?”

The Future of Work

Dr. Lee, in your book you mention that one of the most imminent consequences of technological transformation will be that few professions will be practiced in a similar way to the current one, and that others will be replaced by AI.How will artificial intelligence and automation affect the future of work?

Artificial intelligence and automation will have a significant impact on the future of work, and it is an issue that needs to be addressed with attention and preparation. As I mention in my book, the narrative around this impact is often presented in extreme ways, either in terms of an apocalyptic vision or a full-fledged leisure utopia. The reality, as is often the case, lies somewhere in between.

AI-driven automation has the potential to fundamentally change the nature of many occupations and industries. As I mention in the book, it’s true that up to half of all jobs could face extinction or disruption due to the introduction of AI. What’s interesting, however, is what types of jobs are being affected in the first place. Counterintuitively, blue-collar jobs, like those in most manufacturing fields, will not be significantly affected in the near future.

The reason behind this lies in the nature of human abilities compared to those of machines. Machines are great at quantitative reasoning and data processing, but they still struggle to match the dexterity and accuracy of humans on basic sensorimotor tasks. Therefore, repetitive-rich administrative jobs, such as those related to data entry and information processing, face the greatest disruption.

Instead, jobs that involve creativity, empathy, complex decision-making, and human communication skills are still areas where humans have an advantage. These skills are inherently difficult to automate and are critical in many occupations, such as healthcare, education, and social work.

Therefore, it is essential that companies understand what knowledge and skills they will need in the coming years; and that promote learning, the acquisition of new skills and a culture open to change so that the people whose jobs will be reconfigured can start adopting the new ways of working now”

To what extent will this displacement of employment extend and which industries will be most affected?

At AI Superpowers, I estimated that by 2033, about 40 percent of our jobs could be done primarily through artificial intelligence and automation technologies. Of course, this will not happen overnight. Jobs will be added gradually.

As this happens, it is critical that we are prepared to adapt to these changes and explore new opportunities for work and professional development in areas that require more creative and specialized skills. AI and robotics have the potential to improve efficiency and free humans from repetitive tasks, but they also pose challenges to ensuring a just and equitable transition in the world of work.

On the other hand, the AI era, like previous technological revolutions, is expected to lead to significant job creation. However, we don’t know for sure what these jobs will look like, or when they might start appearing. When the internet first appeared, no one could have predicted the arrival of Uber and its impact on traditional taxi companies. Or the disruption Airbnb would cause in the hospitality industry. Similarly, we can’t predict what innovative ideas AI might enable in the future. AI will also transform entire business models within existing companies. It’s hard to imagine that, at one point, Microsoft had an Internet division. Today, of course, the internet is integrated into every aspect of your business.

How do you see the balance between economic benefits and the reduction of jobs that AI and automation can entail in a global context?

This is a question of great relevance and complexity. Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation undoubtedly have the potential to generate remarkable economic benefits by increasing productivity and efficiency across a variety of industries and tasks. However, as I highlight in my book “AI 2041,” AI and automation stand out from other technologies because of their ability to take on a wide range of human tasks, both cognitive and physical, simultaneously. This poses a unique challenge in terms of employment, as it is not simply a gradual transformation of job tasks, but the potential decline of jobs across multiple sectors and occupations more rapidly.

The balance between economic benefits and job losses depends largely on how we manage this transition. Optimists argue that, historically, technological advances have led to higher economic growth and ultimately job creation in new areas. However, the speed and scope of AI adoption are remarkable and may outpace job creation in the short term.

It is critical to consider how we manage this transition to minimize negative impacts. This includes investing in training and education to help people gain the skills needed in an AI-driven world. In addition, proper regulation can play an important role in ensuring that the adoption of AI is equitable and does not lead to greater concentration of wealth.

Ultimately, the balance between economic benefits and job losses will depend on our decisions and actions as a society. It is a global challenge that requires effective cooperation between governments, businesses, and society as a whole to ensure that AI is used to improve people’s lives in a fair and equitable way.

The key question: What sets us apart?

In a world like the one you describe, where machines can learn, reason, and make amazing decisions, an essential question arises: What can’t artificial intelligence do?

Artificial intelligence has advanced significantly in the last decade, demonstrating its ability to perform a wide range of tasks, from speech recognition to language translation to decision-making in complex games. However, there are certain capabilities and tasks where artificial intelligence still falls short and will likely continue to struggle to master even in 2041.

One of these areas is creativity. Although artificial intelligence can generate creative content, such as music or art, it does so through existing patterns and data, lacking the ability to conceptualize or plan strategically in the same way that humans do. AI is great at optimizing specific goals, but it can’t choose its own goals or think truly creatively and originally.

Another ability is empathy. Artificial intelligence cannot feel or interact with feelings such as empathy and compassion. Despite advances in detecting human emotions, AI still lacks the ability to make another person feel understood and cared for in the same way as a human. Even if it improves in this area, it is unlikely to reach the point where humans are comfortable interacting with robots in situations that require attention and genuine empathy.

Finally, dexterity is another area where AI has limitations. Machines can perform physical tasks, but they lack the dexterity and precise hand-eye coordination needed for complex physical jobs in unfamiliar and unstructured environments. AI can’t effectively deal with situations that it hasn’t previously observed and that require adaptation and understanding of the environment.

It’s important to recognize and leverage those unique abilities as we move forward in the age of artificial intelligence. In jobs that are creative but asocial, human creativity will be amplified by artificial intelligence tools. For example, a scientist can use artificial intelligence tools to accelerate the speed of drug discovery. Ultimately, jobs that demand both creativity and soft skills, such as executive roles, are those in which humans will continue to play a pivotal role in the future.

How can professionals prepare for and take advantage of these areas where AI cannot compete?

To develop these skills, my advice would be to adopt a growth mindset and focus on continuing education and personal development. Creativity is nurtured through exploration, diversity of experiences, and open-mindedness. Empathy is cultivated by understanding and connecting with other people’s experiences, practicing active listening, and participating in volunteer or community service activities. The key is to be willing to adapt and learn throughout life to stay relevant in an AI-driven world.

Relearn, Recalibrate, Reborn

In your book you mention the importance of the ‘3 Rs’ to address the economic revolution of AI: Relearn, Recalibrate and Reborn. Could you explain in more detail how these strategies can help people thrive in a world increasingly driven by artificial intelligence?

Of course, the ‘3 Rs’ are critical to successfully navigating the age of artificial intelligence. Let me break down each of them:

Relearn: In an ever-changing world, the ability to acquire new skills and knowledge is essential. Relearning implies being aware that education and training are continuous processes throughout life. People must be willing to abandon the idea that their formal education is sufficient and look for opportunities to stay current. This may include taking online courses, learning new technologies, or gaining relevant interpersonal skills.

Recalibrate: Recalibration refers to the need to adapt to new work realities. As AI and automation transform the job market, some jobs may disappear or change drastically. Recalibration involves being willing to change industries or roles and finding ways to apply existing skills in different contexts. This may require career guidance and active exploration of opportunities.

Reborn: Rebirth refers to the ability to reinvent oneself and explore new opportunities. In an environment where AI can perform many routine tasks, it’s crucial to excel in areas that require unique human skills, such as creativity, empathy, and ethical decision-making. Adapting to new ways of working and a willingness to take risks are key components of the renaissance.

Not only are these strategies beneficial to individuals on an individual level, but they can also have a positive impact on the economy and society as a whole. By embracing the ‘3 R’s’, people can stay employable and contribute to the economy through their adaptability and ability to address emerging challenges. Additionally, this can help reduce inequality by giving more people the tools to thrive in a changing world. Ultimately, the ‘3 R’s are a proactive response to AI challenges and can contribute to a more equitable and prosperous future.

A promising future

Dr. Lee, I would like, to conclude the interview, for you to share with our readers a final reflection on whether the story of AI will have a happy ending in 204.

AI will open the door to a promising future for humanity. It will create incredible wealth, enhance our capabilities through the symbiosis between humans and AI, improve the way we work, play, and communicate, free us from routine tasks, and, as we have explored in this chapter, lead us into the age of fulfillment.

We have a great responsibility to ensure that artificial intelligence can fulfil its potential, whether in job creation, medical advances, the transformation of industrial processes, access to better quality education or the simplification of our daily lives through countless conveniences, both large and small.

I hope we can tap into the collective concerns and enthusiasm for AI to begin to address key questions about its impact on our world. I hope that we can address security concerns in a way that is sensitive to regional and cultural differences, while being mindful of the future of humanity. As entrepreneurs, I hope we can shift our entrepreneurial mindset from the pursuit of short-term profits to long-term viability by understanding the transformative value of AI and its impact on worker training and reskilling. I hope that governments will start looking at education to make sure our children are prepared for the changes that are coming. I hope we can focus job creation in areas where people, with our empathy, compassion and creativity, will remain irreplaceable.

Regardless of the global competition for technological supremacy, we need concerted action among nations to ensure that AI can fulfill its potential. How we relate to each other on this topic today will determine the nature of the human relationship with AI.

At the same time, however, AI will also pose myriad challenges and risks. These include biases in AI systems, security threats, the proliferation of deepfakes, privacy violations, autonomous weapons, and the possibility of significant job displacement. It is important to remember that these problems are not intrinsic to AI itself, but are the result of malicious or careless use by humans.

We will not be mere passive spectators in the history of AI; We are its creators. The values that underpin our visions of an AI-powered future will become self-fulfilling prophecies. If we believe that we will become a “useless class” as the capabilities of AI expand, we will eliminate any possibility of reinventing ourselves. If we become complacent with the gifts of abundance and stop enriching our minds and our relationships with others, we will put an end to our own evolution as a species. If we feel hopeless and give up as the Singularity approaches, we will start a winter of despair, regardless of whether it arrives or not.

On the other hand, if we cherish liberation from routine work and the fear of hunger and poverty, we will explore new horizons with AI, but, even more importantly, we will explore ourselves. AI will provide us with comfort and security, which will motivate us to seek love and self-actualization. AI will reduce our fears, our vanity, and our greed, helping us connect with nobler human needs and desires. AI will take over routine tasks, encouraging us to explore what it means to be human and what our destiny should be.

Ultimately, the story we’re writing isn’t just the story of AI, it’s the story of ourselves. In the interaction between artificial intelligence and human society, if we manage to make that dance harmonious, it could be considered the greatest achievement in the history of humanity.
