“Our beliefs are the map we follow to interpret the world around us and change our reality. We depend on the mentalities we choose and shelter in our minds to invent and create the future, because in them we have installed the way we see the world.”

José Cabrera – CEO Cabrera MC

Mindset is the lens through which we see the world around us. That’s right, how our brain encodes our view of the world, what we believe and why we believe it, determines our decisions, relationships and level of trust in ourselves and others. Our attitude to challenges and our behaviors are also largely conditioned by our mindsets, so these really determine what we become in life, and are a predictor of our professional success or failure.

Mental models reside in the subconscious and manifest as deeply held beliefs, attitudes, assumptions, and influences. Consequently, in our day-to-day lives, we are not aware of how our mindset influences the way we carry out our responsibilities and interact with others. For example, our experience of the time of the last few years is linear, and possibly the changes you think may become a reality in the next 5-10 years, it is very likely that they will affect you in the next 3-5 years and you will not be prepared to address the challenges they pose in your life on a personal and professional level. Hence, the importance of remaining open to the possibility that the mentalities we have developed for a linear and predictable world must evolve in order to meet the new challenges of an uncertain, complex and rapidly changing world.

We are all born with an intense drive to learn. From childhood we developed lifelong skills, such as learning to walk and talk, without wondering if it was too difficult or not worth the effort. Without worrying about making mistakes or having any missteps, we just fell, got up and moved forward.

So how can our mental models be changed and we can prepare for an uncertain future? The starting point must be an awareness of how and in what context our current mentalities developed, accept that our mentality can be an obstacle to our future development and recognize the need to change. The good news is that we can make small changes in our mindset with significant impact and I hope today’s reflection will help you cultivate the seven mindsets you need to live in uncertainty and grow in adversity.

The seven mindsets are based on years of experience in our Acelera Programs where we’ve helped hundreds of leaders from large and small businesses address disruption from a growth perspective. In all our workshops we address the two key questions to face the challenges of an uncertain world and accelerated change: How to live in uncertainty? And what do leaders have in common who are able to anticipate change and grow in adversity? To find the answer, we follow the most relevant and expert leaders today and share the learning we have validated in our workshops.

1

Purpose Mindset

Purpose Mindset is the ability to align your actions with a clear and meaningful goal. It inspires you to make an impact, contribute to something greater, and find meaning in every step you take, motivating you to persevere even in adversity. Purpose acts as an anchor, providing us with stability in the midst of storms and renewing our motivation in difficult times. Discovering your purpose allows you to align what you love with what you're good at, what the world needs, and how you can be rewarded. This intersection balances your personal and professional life, giving me the clarity needed to navigate uncertainty with purpose and satisfaction at every step. Purposeful living doesn't mean having a grand mission. Sometimes purpose is found in the simplest gestures: bringing joy to others, offering a helping hand, or contributing to a cause you care about. The important thing is that your purpose is authentic and connected to what truly moves you.
2

Growth Mindset

The growth mindset teaches us that in contrast to a fixed mindset, based on the belief that our intelligence, personality, character, are inherent and predetermined, a growth mindset starts from the belief that our capabilities are malleable and our success depends essentially on effort, continuous learning, training and tenacity. Carol Dweck, in her book ''Mindset: The New Psychology of Success'' offers us extensive research that shows that teaching practices based on a growth mindset get better results than those based on a fixed mindset and shows you step by step how you can develop a growth mindset that helps you develop your full potential. Those with this mindset see challenges as opportunities for improvement rather than threats, and they understand that mistakes and failures are part of the path to success. This way of thinking fosters resilience, as every obstacle is an opportunity to learn something new and improve.
3

Antifragile mentality

The idea of an antifragile mindset was first proposed by Nassim Taleb, in his book "Antifragile: The Things That Profit from Disorder," as an attitude to approach challenges with an expectation not only to overcome them, but to take advantage of adversities to grow and prepare for the future. According to his description of this state of mind, the antifragile person is one who thrives despite "volatility, randomness, and disorder." Antifragility is built by accepting ambiguity, disruption and stressors to emerge from the other side stronger and more flexible for future challenges. Moving towards antifragility does not imply eliminating all fragility, because there will always be vulnerable areas. But by recognizing and working on them, the blows will not destroy us, but will propel us forward. It is a continuous learning process, where each mistake becomes a tool to perfect our strengths. As a leader, start by adopting an anti-fragile mentality with your team. By primarily following an anti-fragile mindset, rather than an optimization and profitability mindset only, the organization will be able to better adapt to uncertainty and learn not only to survive but to thrive in the face of adversity.
4

Abundance Mindset

In his book ''Abundance'', Peter Diamandis reminds us that the future is not doomed to scarcity. It invites us to imagine a world of nine billion people, all with access to clean water, nutritious food, affordable housing, personalized education, world-class health care, and clean, ubiquitous energy. Building this better world is humanity's greatest challenge, and adopting an Abundance Mindset can catalyze the change needed to achieve it. Adopting this mindset challenges us to change the way we see the world. Instead of focusing on what's missing, we start to see what's multiplying around us. It's like changing from an old map, where everything seemed limited, to an ever-expanding dynamic map. The frontiers of the possible are moving every day, driven by technology and global collaboration. The combination of advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and global connectivity has created an environment where growth no longer follows the rules of the past. Each innovation not only builds on top of the previous ones, but multiplies its effects, creating a future of abundance that our minds are accustomed to assimilating. Exponential thinking not only transforms industries, but also profoundly redefines the way we live and work. It pushes us out of our comfort zone, which is often more of a danger zone than a safe haven. It invites us to explore the future with an open mind, freed from the self-imposed constraints that restrict our ability to innovate.
5

Infinite Mindset

The infinite mindset in contrast to people who live with a finite mindset: who wake up every morning trying to be number one, make more money or increase their capacity for power, people who live with an infinite mindset, wake up every day thinking about how to have a positive impact on the people around them. Simon Sinek in his book ''The infinite game'' teaches us that when we play with infinite mentality we play to grow: it is not about winning, we seek to grow, evolve and develop our maximum potential as people in constant evolution. We consider failure as a necessary event that contributes to the game experience and moves it forward. The infinite mindset leads us to have a higher, challenging, optimistic, and inclusive purpose that transcends ourselves. We play to leave a legacy, to inspire others to take up the torch and carry it forward, continuing our work and contributing to a better world.
6

Entrepreneurial mindset

Generally we see the future as a reality external to us, in front of which we have to take a position and to do so we try to predict it to plan it. When we use an entrepreneurial mindset to address our future, we start from a different premise: we are the ones who create our own future. The entrepreneurial mentality is the observatory that will allow us to explore the new reality, which will help us to develop new perspectives, to begin to glimpse new possible futures and embark on the path towards the desired future. This is the natural way of reasoning in entrepreneurs and innovators. The entrepreneurial attitude is particularly useful in complex and uncertain moments such as the current ones, since it moves us directly to action, to stop feeling victims of circumstances and encourage us to become true protagonists of our lives, convinced that to the extent that we are the ones who create our own future, we do not need to predict it to control it.
7

Ethical Mindset

In a world increasingly influenced by technology, we need an ethical compass more than ever. Decisions that were previously made by humans are now in the hands of algorithms that, at times, perpetuate prejudices and hidden biases. Ethical mindset is the ability to guide your actions and decisions based on sound principles, values, and moral responsibility. It guides you to act with integrity, respecting both others and the environment in which you operate. Ethics is not a complement in this new technological era, it is an urgent need. As we delegate critical decisions—such as who gets a job or who has access to medical treatment—to machines, we must face an inconvenient truth: machines have no consciousness. They do not feel empathy or assume moral responsibility for their decisions. And precisely because of this absence of awareness, ethics is our last line of defense to ensure that technological progress does not compromise our human values.

Where to start?

It is my personal conviction, that we all have the potential to grow and move in the direction of further development of our mentality. My proposal is that you start by adopting the personal attitude that you can define your own future, if you take a more active role in it. That is, being aware that the future is not a mere projection of the past, but something new that we build every day and that emerges as a result of our actions and omissions. Therefore, you must start by believing in your own ability to impact your future, and go undertaking, step by step, the path to a desired future.

On a personal level , in order to act in the present and to be able to observe and recognize our mentalities, we have to reflect inwardly and pay attention as many times as possible during the day to see through our usual automatisms and attitudes. This start will result, by force, in an increase in the level of awareness about what we can do, about what is possible and about what can help us become true protagonists of our future, living aware that we are a “permanent beta” of an unfinished project, in permanent construction, which will need subsequent revisions to develop its maximum potential. Since we cannot predict our future, we should devote all the energy to building it, these are three simple steps to follow.

At the organizational level , a powerful way to approach disruption from a growth perspective is to develop antifragility as a strategic capacity and take advantage of emerging crises to adapt, innovate and prepare for the future.

If you want to accelerate the growth of your future leaders, equipping them with the seven mindsets, competencies and skills they need to transform themselves, their teams and the organization, that is our mission and what we do as a company. Shall we talk?.
