Together we will discover how emerging technologies can be harnessed to drive growth and transformation in all spheres of society. Let’s get started!
Vision & Motivation
Peter, your perspective of an economy of abundance has been really inspiring to a lot of people. What was the inspiration behind your book “Abundance” and what led you to share this optimistic vision of the future?
The motivation behind ‘Abundance’ was my deep belief that technology, innovation, and global collaboration have the power to transform problems into amazing opportunities. I wanted to encourage people to think outside the box and come together to build a great future for the next generations.
The idea came to me in several ways. First of all, I have always been convinced that technology is capable of solving the most difficult challenges. I believe that not only can it solve problems, but it can also take us to levels of well-being that we previously only imagined.
Then there’s the idea of thinking big. I realized that in order to make real, big change, we have to leave conventional ideas behind and embrace innovation in a big way. Sometimes, what seems impossible in a normal approach becomes feasible with a little creativity and bold innovation.
Finally, I was very excited about the idea of changing the conversation in the world, of painting a positive picture of the future. We constantly hear that pessimistic narrative that we’re bombarded with by the media, and I wanted to get people away from the idea that there are always shortages and problems, and show that despite the challenges, we have a world full of opportunities. I wanted to motivate people to come together in creating a better future for future generations.
My life’s mission is to empower entrepreneurs to create a hopeful, compelling, and abundant future for humanity. For me, abundance isn’t just an idea, it’s a way of looking at the world and understanding reality. It means that there are enough resources and opportunities for everyone, and that we can build a bright future if we all come together. This perspective can affect our decisions and actions, and help us overcome that mindset that there is always scarcity and competition. I hope it inspires others as much as it inspired me!
How do you manage to stand firm in the optimism for which you are so well known, without potentially falling into blindness or the naivety associated with excessive optimism?
To maintain a balance between optimism and objectivity, it is crucial to approach challenges and obstacles with a realistic and grounded mindset. Optimism does not imply ignoring difficulties, but rather facing them with a positive attitude and the conviction that they can be overcome. To avoid blindness or naivety, I try to stay true to a data-driven, fact-based approach when evaluating situations and challenges. I also seek diverse perspectives from experts in each sector, and I often question my own assumptions to ensure that I maintain an objective view of reality. The key is to focus on the opportunities and solutions that optimism can offer, always maintaining a balance between hope and realism. But, some critics argue that over-optimism about technology and abundance could overlook real challenges, such as economic and social disparities.
How do you address these concerns and how do you see the coexistence between the economy of abundance and the narrowing of the gap between rich and poor?
While technologies can democratize access to information and certain resources, achieving equality and social equity in all regions faces a complex challenge that involves economic, cultural, political, and social factors. It is important to recognize that technologies alone do not ensure the construction of an egalitarian society.
However, the economy of abundance, and the intelligent use of technology and innovation, has the potential to create opportunities for people from all walks of life to participate in the creation and distribution of wealth, and can therefore play an important role in reducing the gap between rich and poor by democratizing access to opportunities and resources. By providing solutions that were previously unattainable for marginalized communities, new avenues of economic and social empowerment can be generated.
The Origin of My Abundance Mindset
One of the key aspects of your thinking is the notion of “abundance.” Could you tell us about your initial experience developing a mindset of abundance and the importance of changing the narrative about humanity’s progress?
Looking at the changes in society over the past few decades, it is evident and impressive how we have advanced. People are living longer, infant mortality rates have fallen, and population growth has slowed. In addition, access to food, water, shelter and health care has improved significantly. We even see an increase in democracy globally. These transformations lead us to ask an essential question: Why are certain aspects of human existence improving so much?
Are these improvements due to the presence of more competent politicians or more effective governance? Are we, as human beings, getting smarter? Or could it be that these transformations came about because technology has become more powerful and accessible to everyone?
The simplicity of this initial question took me by surprise, prompting a telltale moment of clarity in my mind. This question triggered an intense two-year reflection that transformed my perspective on the world. Instead of just identifying problems around me, I began to recognize opportunities—challenges that deserved to be addressed and solved.
Instead of perceiving a future marked by scarcity, I envisioned a horizon of increasing abundance. A world where technology has the potential to respond to the needs of all people, regardless of gender or age.
Could you explain in more detail the essence of an abundance mindset and how it differs from the scarcity mindset?
An abundance mindset is a way of thinking that focuses on the opportunities and resources available rather than focusing on scarcity and lack of resources. It’s an approach that challenges the conventional belief that resources are limited and that we should compete for them. Instead, the abundance mindset encourages us to seek creative and collaborative solutions to address challenges, believing that the world is full of limitless opportunities if we work together.
The key difference between the abundance mindset and the scarcity mindset lies in the way we view and approach problems. The scarcity mindset tends to focus on what’s missing, generating fear, competition, and often triggering decisions based on self-protection. On the other hand, the abundance mindset focuses on what is possible and how we can take advantage of the resources and opportunities available, encouraging creativity, collaboration, and the search for innovative solutions.
How can we protect our mindset from being negatively affected by constant exposure to negative news?
Constant exposure to negative news can be overwhelming and detrimental to our mindset. My advice is to be selective with the information we consume and practice the “information diet”. This means filtering out news sources and limiting the time we spend absorbing negative content. Instead, let’s spend time researching and understanding the positive trends and advancements in different fields.
It’s also crucial to cultivate a network of positive influences, surround ourselves with people who share an abundance mindset and who focus on solutions rather than problems. In addition, we can practice mindfulness and gratitude techniques to maintain a balanced perspective. The key is to be aware of how the information we consume affects us and take proactive steps to protect our positive mindset and approach. In this way, we can see the world in a more realistic and hopeful way, and be more prepared to face the challenges and opportunities that come our way.
The Practices of Abundance
Do you consider the abundance mindset to be an easy concept to convey and one that is uniformly understood, or have you encountered challenges in trying to communicate its essence and meaning?
Telling the story of abundance in various settings has been an enriching experience. I observed that while some were quick to embrace this concept and see the potential for abundance in everything, others were reluctant. Although they wanted to believe what he said (for who doesn’t like good news?), what he shared with them didn’t resonate with their personal perception of the world. The notion of abundance clashed with their experiences and with what they often observed on the daily news. It was this struggle to help shape an abundance mindset that led me and my team to seek out and publish evidence of abundance on our blog.
Now, focusing on consolidating a mindset of abundance in our daily lives, could you share what do you consider to be the key behaviors to achieve this? In practice, the abundance mindset is about driving a more ambitious and collaborative approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities we face.
Here are some key behaviors:
Recognize and take advantage of technological acceleration, understanding that progress is not linear but exponential, which leads us to explore the potential of technologies such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology.
Set bold goals that challenge seemingly insurmountable problems, encouraging creativity and the search for innovative solutions that can change the course of events.
Foster collaboration with our colleagues, sharing ideas, resources, and knowledge to collectively address complex challenges. Open innovation pushes the boundaries of what’s possible.
Look beyond short-term gains and focus on building a better future. This long-term perspective guides strategic decisions and prioritizes investments in research, education, and infrastructure.
How can we evaluate our daily behaviors, to know if we are adopting a mindset of abundance or scarcity?
Here are some questions that can help you reflect on your mental focus and determine whether you’re adopting an abundance or scarcity mindset in different aspects of your life.
How do I react to challenges? Do I see them as opportunities to learn and grow, or as insurmountable obstacles?, Do I often worry about a lack of resources or focus on how I can make the most of what I have?, Am I willing to collaborate and share my knowledge and resources with others, or do I feel like I must compete to protect what I have?.
How do I handle failure? Do I see it as an opportunity to improve and move forward, or as a confirmation that I don’t have enough? Is my main focus on what I lack and what I can’t do, or how can I innovate and find solutions to move forward?
How do I perceive the opportunities that present themselves in my life? Do I see them as rare exceptions or as natural manifestations of a world full of possibilities? Do I feel like there are strict limits to what I can achieve, or do I think I can overcome obstacles and achieve my goals with creativity and determination?
Evidence of Abundance
In your book, you present solid evidence that the world is experiencing significant improvements. I guess in recent years, these trends have continued and accelerated. Could you summarize some of the most relevant trends we could share with friends and family to influence their perspective on abundance?
To be sure, here are some remarkable pieces of evidence that add to many others available on my website.
Reduction of extreme poverty levels
According to global data and trends, there has been a decline in extreme poverty levels globally in recent decades. International organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank have reported a steady decline in the proportion of people living in extreme poverty, defined as living on less than US$1.90 a day.
This decline is attributed to a number of factors, including improvements in access to education, health care, technology, and economic opportunities in many parts of the world. However, it is important to note that extreme poverty still persists in many regions and that there are significant challenges to achieving complete poverty eradication
Improved health and life expectancy
Life expectancy has increased significantly, reflecting improvements in health and quality of life. Maternal mortality has decreased considerably, and advances in health care, such as new treatments and therapies, have contributed significantly to improving people’s health and longevity. Preventive and curative medical care has evolved, allowing diseases to be treated and prevented more efficiently. Health education and public awareness of healthy practices, such as smoking prevention and moderate alcohol consumption, have contributed to longer, healthier lives.
These are just some of the factors that have contributed to the increase in global life expectancy. Importantly, however, improvements in health and longevity have not occurred uniformly across the globe, and challenges still exist in many regions in terms of access to quality healthcare and health inequalities.
Reduction of conflicts and reduction of violence
Despite ongoing conflicts, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which often receive extensive coverage in the news, overall, there has been a decline in large-scale armed conflicts. Mortality rates in these conflicts have dropped considerably compared to previous centuries. Although conflicts still unfortunately cause civilian casualties, the numbers tend to be lower than in the past, due to an increased focus on the protection of civilians in the midst of conflict. The creation of international organizations, such as the United Nations, has promoted cooperation between countries and contributed to the reduction of violence at the global level. However, it is critical to recognize that challenges and conflicts persist in different parts of the world, underscoring the continued need for efforts to maintain and promote peace.
Increased learning and literacy
At the global level, there has been a significant increase in commitment to the importance of universal education as a fundamental tool for individual and socio-economic development. Literacy rates have risen sharply in various parts of the world in recent decades. In addition, access to basic and higher education for children and adults has been expanded.
The proliferation of technology, including access to the Internet and mobile devices, has played a critical role in facilitating access to information and online learning. This allows people to access educational resources from virtually anywhere in the world. In addition, active work has been done to reduce the gender gap in education, however, it is important to recognize that there are still challenges in literacy and access to education in some parts of the world, and a continued effort is required to address these issues.
Vision of the future
The arrival of ChatGPT surprised us, it appeared out of nowhere and suddenly, everyone knew about a technology that a month earlier no one had heard of. That was incredible. Do you think we’ll see something similar in other areas in the near future?”
Undoubtedly, the arrival of ChatGPT was amazing and showed how technology can advance quickly and pleasantly surprise us. As for the future, I see two especially exciting areas that I will focus my time on. The first is the world of longevity and biotechnology, where adding decades to the period of human health is vitally important. I firmly believe that in a few years we will realize that life span and health are malleable, and that aging can be slowed, stopped, and even reversed, which will have huge implications for society.
The other area of my interest is quantum technologies, including quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum communications, and encryption. These technologies are starting to take off and before the end of this decade, we will see how they have a significant impact in various areas. I am excited to see how science and technology advance in these areas and look forward to the transformations they will bring.
Finally, Peter, what would be your most outstanding message to those who wish to contribute to a future of abundance and prosperity for all?
My most important message would be to start by changing our mindset from scarcity to a mindset of abundance. This means moving away from focusing on what is missing or limited and instead focusing on the opportunities and resources available. It is essential to recognize the evidence that the world is improving in various aspects, such as reducing poverty, increasing life expectancy and decreasing violence. By doing so, we can transform our perception of the world and feel empowered to contribute to a better future.
In addition, it is essential that we dare to think boldly and take advantage of exponential technologies, such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology. These technologies have the potential to lead us to truly revolutionary solutions that previously seemed unattainable. We need to move away from the siloed approach and embrace collaboration and open innovation. Sharing knowledge, resources, and skills can significantly speed up problem-solving and push the boundaries of what we consider possible.
Finally, I urge us to think long-term rather than obsess over short-term gains. This means prioritizing investment in research and development, education, and sustainable projects that can benefit future generations. By following these principles, we can all contribute to building a more prosperous and fulfilling future for all humanity.
Undoubtedly, changing the course of our conversations and adopting a mindset of action and resolve is a fundamental step in building a better future. When we stop lamenting and focus on problem-solving, we can inspire and lead the way to a more promising and abundance-filled future for generations to come. Every little effort adds up, and together we are able to make a significant impact.
I thank Peter for sharing his ideas and inspiring vision. And to all our dear readers, we thank you for joining us for this interview. I hope you enjoyed the conversation and feel inspired to contribute to a better world!
